The inevitable result of globalization
Discussing and finding solutions to address the challenges of labor migration for young Vietnamese people is one of the key objectives of the "Passport to the Future: Creating positive change and fostering opportunities for young people" seminar organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Migration Agency, in coordination with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on December 18 in Hanoi. The activity was attended by representatives from government agencies, diplomatic agencies and international organizations and more than 200 young people in Hanoi to discuss the impact of globalization and migration on young people.
It can be seen that the economic restructuring, changes in labor structure in industries, job shortages, labor migration, and international education are inevitable results of the globalization process. Workers tend to migrate from provinces and countries with surplus labor and low income to provinces and countries with labor shortage and high income.
According to the General Statistics Office, the number of Vietnamese international migrants accounts for nearly 9% of the population and domestic migrants is more than 7% of the population, mainly young people. Young migrants often face difficulties such as lack of soft skills, job application skills, job search skills on the internet, working in toxic and dangerous environments, being paid inadequate wages, being discriminated against in terms of wages compared to local people... In addition, due to language barriers and cultural differences, migrant workers also suffer many disadvantages.
Many proposals were made during the Dialogue to address these challenges. Accordingly, delegates emphasized that increasing investment in skills and knowledge transfer is an important key to creating jobs for young people, equipping them with the necessary tools to contribute to the development of Vietnam and confidently determining a safe and legal direction in today's globalized world.
The discussed contents also contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Vietnam Youth Development Strategy for the period 2021-2023.

"Act today and together"
Mr. Nguyen Tuong Lam, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Permanent Deputy Chairman of the National Committee on Vietnamese Youth, said that raising awareness among young people and promoting their strong participation in safe migration is a meaningful and practical activity in line with the functions and tasks of the Youth Union.
He expressed his hope that ministries, departments, branches, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations would accompany young people in starting businesses and establishing careers; support the creation of an environment and opportunities for young people to practice and improve their skills in accessing services and information on safe migration when participating in the labor market and studying at home and abroad.
Ms. Park Mihyung, Head of Mission of IOM in Vietnam, emphasized the potential that youth represent to society and that migration can be an essential driving force for the comprehensive development of youth:
"In the future, there will be even more people moving around, to find better opportunities for life and more diverse experiences for themselves. Globalization and the development of the Internet will create a different world for young people. Therefore, it is even more important that the young generation is equipped with new knowledge and skills to orient themselves in the current digital and globalized era," Ms. Park Mihyung emphasized.
According to Ms. Park Mihyung, in recent times, IOM Vietnam has actively coordinated with many Government agencies and relevant partners to equip young people with new and practical skills, share knowledge about the changing employment landscape, and support the Government in adjusting the education and vocational training system to meet market requirements.
“Young people are the embodiment of our hope and can be agents of change for an inclusive and sustainable future. Let us act today and together, we can create an enabling environment for the young generation to participate in decision-making and realize their full potential,” said Park Mihyung.
In addition, within the framework of the Dialogue, delegates had the opportunity to experience the journey of migrants through highly interactive information booths that disseminated necessary knowledge about safe migration, some skills and skills improvement courses for young people, support services for migrants going abroad and returning as well as employment and education opportunities abroad.
On the occasion of International Migrants Day, Vietnamese youth call on everyone to “Act today: You can be part of the solution”. Some of the youth’s proposals have been sent to representatives of government agencies, embassies, and international organizations in Vietnam.
