On August 19, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Le Minh Tung - former Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee (2004-2011) - said he was very moved to hear the news of the professor's passing at the age of 84. "Professor Vo Tong Xuan's contributions to An Giang in particular and the Mekong Delta in general are immense," said Mr. Tung.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan is a teacher and agriculturalist not only in Vietnam, but also in the world.
Professor Vo Tong Xuan's contributions to Vietnam in general and the Mekong Delta in particular, including An Giang, are enormous.
From his youth until the end of his life, he always devoted himself to the country's education and agriculture.
"Mr. Xuan has devoted his whole life to his work. After being the vice principal of Can Tho University, he became the principal of Tan Tao University in Long An.
He then transferred to An Giang University, then returned to Nam Can Tho University until the end of his life. At the time of his death, Mr. Xuan was still the honorary principal of Nam Can Tho University," said Mr. Tung.
According to Mr. Tung, since December 1999, An Giang University was established, Professor Vo Tong Xuan became the first principal (after Can Tho University). He has made great contributions to the education career of An Giang province, bringing this school to its current development.
"My biggest impression of Professor Xuan was that at that time I was the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Professor Xuan brought the divine rice varieties to An Giang to help An Giang farmers switch from one crop to two crops of rice.
At that time, we converted 180,000 hectares of single-crop floating rice to double-crop and triple-crop rice as it is now. These are short-term, high-yield rice varieties that improved the appearance of the Long Xuyen Quadrangle in the 1980s," Mr. Tung said.
Mr. Tung affirmed that for An Giang, Professor Vo Tong Xuan had two great contributions, notably his contribution to the education sector at An Giang University and in the agricultural sector, Professor Xuan brought many short-term varieties such as 732 and IR36 to An Giang.
These are short-term, high-yield rice varieties that help farmers switch from 1 crop to 2 crops and then 3 crops as they are now.
"When An Giang University was established, I was assigned to be the vice principal. Then I was appointed as vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee until 2011. In 2010, Professor Xuan left An Giang, so I became vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee and principal until my retirement," said Mr. Tung.

A role model for teachers to follow
Talking about the first principal of An Giang University (under Ho Chi Minh City National University), Associate Professor Dr. Vo Van Thang - principal of An Giang University - said that Professor Vo Tong Xuan was a scientist who was very passionate about researching rice varieties and plants in the Mekong Delta.
The professor has made many contributions to help farmers in the Mekong Delta suffer less and be less poor.
"Because of that passion, he has become a role model for teachers and students to follow. His research has been applied in practice, such as rice, as many documents have mentioned," said Mr. Thang.
According to Mr. Thang, every school faces many difficulties when it is first established. Mr. Xuan has made great contributions to help An Giang University develop as it is today. "I have been to many places, so when I returned to An Giang, I wanted the school to develop more and more, so I put all my mind - the heart of a teacher - into building a solid foundation for the school as it is today," Mr. Thang recalled.
