USD exchange rate on the world market

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the strength of the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 100.56 points, down 0.36 points compared to the trading session on September 26, 2024.

Foreign exchange price on September 22, 2024: USD decreased by 24 VND, at 24,148 VND

The US dollar weakened in a volatile session as earlier gains, fueled by upbeat US economic data, faded. Meanwhile, the Swiss franc surged after the Swiss National Bank decided to cut interest rates by 25 basis points.

The greenback pared losses after data showed U.S. weekly jobless claims fell 4,000 to a four-month low of 218,000, below the 225,000 forecast by economists polled by Reuters. Other reports showed corporate profits rose more than initially expected in the second quarter, and gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an unadjusted 3 percent rate.

New orders for key US capital goods also unexpectedly rose in August, although business spending on equipment trended lower in the third quarter.

“Once again, we see a disconnect between the Fed cutting rates and the fact that the economy is still growing at 3% or more,” said Joseph Trevisani, senior analyst at FXStreet in New York. “This leaves the market with no idea how to react. Why are we cutting rates? It may not hurt the economy, but help it, given that the neutral rate is now lower.”

“Markets will be focused on further signals from the Fed this week, especially Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech on Thursday,” said Peter Nurse, financial expert at Investing.com.

Powell will deliver a pre-recorded speech at the U.S. Treasury Market Conference in New York, according to the Fed. Several other Fed officials have spoken this week, with most backing the 50 basis point cut last week. But they have also warned that rates may not fall as sharply at upcoming meetings.

The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, is due out on Friday and could influence the central bank’s plans to raise interest rates. Data has shown the US economy growing strongly, with GDP in the second quarter hitting an annual rate of 3.0%, while jobless claims unexpectedly fell, indicating a sustained recovery in the labour market.
