For example, the price of rice today, February 23, for Dai Thom 8 is from 7,400-7,700 VND/kg, but on February 20, it is 8,300-8,400 VND/kg (fresh rice price sold in the field), and before Tet, this rice variety is up to 9,300 VND/kg. This also means that the price of Dai Thom 8 rice has decreased from 1,600-1,900 VND/kg.
The price of OM18 rice purchased by traders at the field is equivalent to Dai Thom 8.
The price of OM5451 rice currently purchased by traders at the field is 7,500-7,600 VND/kg, while before Tet it was purchased at 9,200 VND/kg, a decrease of 1,600-1,700 VND/kg.
Today's rice price for IR50404 variety is being purchased at the field at 7,400-7,500 VND/kg, while before Tet it was purchased at 8,500-8,700 VND/kg.
According to the reporter's records, in Trung Hung commune, Co Do district, Can Tho city, these days, people are harvesting winter-spring rice 2024. Before the information about the decrease in rice prices, people here said that traders asked to buy at a lower price than the price they had previously deposited.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bui in Trung Hung commune, Co Do district said that this winter-spring rice crop, he planted 7 hectares of winter-spring rice with Dai Thom 8 variety. Although traders came to buy at 8,000 VND/kg, a few days ago, traders came to buy at 400 VND/kg lower than the deposit price (the time of deposit and the time of purchase were 1 week apart).
Because the price of rice has decreased, which is the general situation of the market, and the rice has ripened and is ready to be harvested, Mr. Bui had to sell.

Mr. Tran Van An, also from Trung Hung commune, said that before Tet, many traders came to his house to deposit to buy Dai Thom 8 rice at a price of more than 9,000 VND/kg, but his family did not agree, because they wanted to wait until the harvest day to receive the deposit. Unexpectedly, since Tet until now, the price of rice has gradually decreased and can only be sold at 8,400 VND/kg.
According to Mr. An, because the harvest is at this time, the selling price is 1,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year. If it is longer, the selling price may be even lower.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, residing in Trung Thanh commune, Co Do district, this winter-spring rice crop, her family planted 4.7 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice. Although traders have come to deposit to buy at 8,600 VND/kg, she is very worried that when it comes time to harvest, traders will ask to lower the purchase price due to the decrease in rice prices.
"Traders deposit 8,600 VND/kg, but if they ask for a lower purchase price, we have to accept it. Because when the harvest day comes, it's hard to find another trader," said Ms. Huong.
Mr. Huynh Van Bang - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Co Do district also said that since the Lunar New Year until now, the price of winter-spring rice has continuously decreased and fluctuated. "There are days when rice has 2 to 3 prices, which is normal" - Mr. Bang said.
The Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City also informed that people in the three districts of Co Do, Thoi Lai, and Vinh Thanh are focusing on harvesting winter-spring rice. According to records, rice prices have decreased compared to the beginning of the harvest season.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, in the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring crop, Can Tho City people planted about 72,800 hectares, most of which were concentrated in the three districts of Co Do, Thoi Lai, and Vinh Thanh. The most widely grown rice variety by people is Dai Thom 8, accounting for 67%.
