Market assessment and retail pork prices

Experts say that the price of live pigs may continue to rise in the coming time due to high demand. If this trend does not decrease, some southern localities may record a price of 84,000 VND/kg in a short time.

At WinMart, after the adjustment at the beginning of the week, the price of Meat Deli chilled pork remains stable at 119,920 - 163,122 VND/kg. In particular, WinMart is implementing a 20% discount program for members. Of which, pork belly has the highest price, reaching 163,122 VND/kg, followed by lean meat at 157,520 VND/kg and boneless ham listed at 127,922 VND/kg.

At Ha Hien Fresh Food Company, pork prices have been adjusted in opposite directions. Specifically, lean meat increased by 7,000 VND/kg to 125,000 VND/kg, while the price of lard decreased to 80,000 VND/kg. Pork products at this unit are currently priced in the range of 80,000 - 191,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Le Xuan Huy, Deputy General Director of CP Vietnam Livestock Company, said that although household farming tends to decrease, industrial livestock enterprises still ensure supply to the market. Currently, many enterprises are increasing pork output to stabilize prices.

In addition, Mr. Huy also noted that if pork prices remain high for too long, consumers may switch to other foods, reducing demand for pork, thereby pushing prices down. In addition, imported frozen pork is also contributing to supplementing domestic supply, helping the market gradually cool down. According to forecasts, in the next 1-2 months, pork prices may decrease.

According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien, the current price of live pigs has a significant impact on the consumer price index (CPI), accounting for 65% of the CPI structure of the food group. The high price of live pigs brings profits to farmers, but at the same time requires a balance between the interests of farmers and consumers.

"Localities need to encourage herd restoration in the direction of biosecurity, strictly control diseases, especially African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease. In addition, it is necessary to promote breeding production to ensure supply, while enhancing digital transformation in the livestock industry, building a national livestock data system to manage and regulate the market more effectively," Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.

The live hog market is showing signs of slowing down in some areas after a period of strong growth. Although supply remains abundant thanks to large-scale livestock enterprises, consumption demand and pork import trends remain important factors to monitor.

According to experts, if there are no major changes in disease or supply, pig prices may gradually cool down from the second quarter of 2025. However, in the short term, the market is still affected by feed costs and piglet supply, two factors that determine production costs.

In the current context, farmers need to have a reasonable strategy for herd restoration, and proactively apply bio-secure livestock farming models to minimize risks from disease and price fluctuations.
