Southern pig price
In the South, the live hog market continued to rise in many places. Notably, prices in Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau increased by 2 prices, reaching a peak of 66,000 VND/kg.
This area is currently purchasing live pigs at prices ranging from 62,000 to 66,000 VND/kg. In Tien Giang alone, the price of live pigs remains the lowest in the region at 62,000 VND/kg.
Reasons for high prices
According to experts, the current price of live pigs is affected by a number of factors:
- Year-end consumption demand: "The end of the year is the time when demand for pork increases sharply, especially in large cities." This supports prices to remain high, helping farmers achieve good profits.
- Stable supply: Policies to support livestock farming and herd restoration help stabilize pork supply, however, maintaining quality remains a big challenge.
- Frozen pork import policy: Imported frozen pork at competitive prices contributes to stabilizing the market and preventing excessive price increases.
- Market psychology: Farmers tend to hold on to their goods when prices are high, waiting for better prices near Tet, creating pressure to increase prices in the short term.
Livestock situation in Lang Son
Lang Son Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said the province's total pig herd is currently around 175,000. Compared to the same period last year, the pig herd decreased by more than 9,000 (3.3%), mainly due to the impact of African swine fever, according to Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper.
From the beginning of the year to early December, the disease has spread to 790 villages, 162 communes and 11 districts and cities, with more than 4,500 households affected. The number of pigs culled increased 6.5 times compared to 2023, reaching 16,600, with a total weight of nearly 725,000 kg.
The disease spread rapidly from May to August, with the number of outbreaks increasing 2.5 times compared to the previous year. On average, Lang Son province had to destroy about 290 pigs per day.
According to the Lang Son Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the risk of further outbreaks still exists due to the small-scale farming model and inadequate sanitation and disinfection, creating conditions for the virus to spread. In addition, there is currently no specific treatment for this disease.
