Ho Chi Minh City , 50-year-old woman went to acupuncture and joint cracking, then the pain gradually increased, unable to sit up, the doctor discovered that rib number 12 was broken.

On May 15, Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Head of the Musculoskeletal Correction Center, Hospital 1A, said that 10 days ago, the patient attended a party and drank a lot of alcohol, causing digestive disorders and requiring hospitalization for 6 days.

Afterwards, the patient felt tired and had back pain, so she went to a facility in Thu Duc City for acupressure and joint cracking. During the treatment, the patient had sharp pain in her right lower back, but the spa staff said "it's okay" and continued to "crack her joints". After the second treatment, the woman had more pain, could not walk, had difficulty breathing, and felt tired, so she went to Hospital 1A for examination.

X-ray results showed that rib number 12 was broken at the costovertebral joint. The doctor treated the patient with laser pain relief and local pain medication. After 15 minutes, the patient was able to sit up, then gradually regained consciousness and walked.

The patient was prescribed outpatient medication, and told to rest and limit body movement for a month to allow the ribs to heal. Next, the patient was treated for low back pain and a herniated disc.

Dr. Trinh said that chiropractic manipulation is a fairly common treatment technique but is currently being pushed to an "excessive level". Chiropractic services are usually for the purpose of relaxation treatment and in some cases of reduced range of motion of the joint or early stage of ankylosing spondylitis. This technique is not used to treat pain caused by mechanical misalignment or disc herniation because it has little effect.

"If unskilled technicians perform or try to make a 'crackling' sound to satisfy the patient, it will risk causing injury and broken bones," said Dr. Trinh.
