Gamuda wins largest project in Taiwan with RM4.3 billion MRT contract
RM4.3 billion design and build contract for Xizhi Donghu MRT line, with additional works amounting to RM10.8 billion.
Gamuda Berhad (Gamuda), a leading regional engineering and construction group, has scored its biggest ever win, winning the RM4.3 billion (NT$31.96 billion) Xizhi Donghu MRT Line project in Taiwan. This is Gamuda’s seventh major infrastructure project in Taiwan, cementing its position in the international market.
The project was awarded by the New Taipei City Government to an unincorporated joint venture between Gamuda (75%) and two local partners, MiTAC Information Technology Corp (15%) and Dong Pi Co Limited (10%). With a 75% stake, Gamuda will undertake the bulk of the work, with a contract value of up to RM3.2 billion (NT$23.97 billion).
This design and construction project is expected to be completed in 7 years, with main items including:
- 5.78 km of viaducts and railways;
- 6 elevated stations;
- Essential systems such as trains, power supply, signals, platform gates, communication systems, central monitoring, automatic fare collection and maintenance equipment at the depot.
In addition, the joint venture is also ready to undertake additional works worth RM10.8 billion (NT$80 billion) when required. These include the maintenance depot for the Xizhi Donghu Line and the track system for two extension lines: the Keelung Line MRT and the Minsheng Line MRT. Gamuda’s share of the contract value from the additional works will be approximately RM8.1 billion (NT$60 billion). These works are expected to be awarded before the completion of the main project, bringing the total value of the entire project to approximately RM15.1 billion.
Commenting on the project, Gamuda said: “This is our biggest achievement in Taiwan since entering the market 20 years ago. This success is a testament to Gamuda’s ability to win large-scale projects in competitive international markets, and reflects the strong confidence that the Taiwanese authorities have in our expertise and project execution capabilities.”
The Xizhi Donghu MRT project is an important part of New Taipei City's large-scale infrastructure development strategy to meet the growing mobility needs of urban residents.
Gamuda’s success in Taiwan began with the award-winning Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line in 2008 (awarded in 2002). Since then, Gamuda has played a key role in developing Taiwan’s modern transport infrastructure, including the RM2.13 billion Taoyuan City Metro Project in 2022 and the RM3.45 billion Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line in 2023. In addition, the group has also completed and handed over the Guantang Sea Bridge in October 2023, and is currently implementing the Taipei Port Seawall and the 161kV Songshu to Guanfeng Underground Transmission Line.
In June 2024, Gamuda was announced by Institutional Investor Research (II Research) – a global independent research organization – as one of the top 3 leading enterprises in Asia in the field of construction and infrastructure development (excluding Japan). Over the past nearly three decades, Gamuda Land, a member of the group, has developed many modern urban areas and prosperous communities in many countries.
Present in Vietnam since 2007, Gamuda Land Vietnam has built two green urban areas, Gamuda City in Hanoi and Celadon City in Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, Gamuda Land has expanded its scale with a total of 7 projects in Vietnam.
