In nearly 80 years of life, Elvis Phuong has had 43 full years with his wife Le Hoa. Over the past 4 decades, many people still admire the perfect marriage, "inseparable for a second" of Elvis Phuong and his wife.

Throughout the conversation with Dan Tri reporter, the male singer passionately talked about the memories with his wife Le Hoa, from the time they first fell in love to when they were together and their lifelong promise.

In particular, for the first time Elvis Phuong mentioned his children...

"I hope my wife will take me to my final resting place"

What made the romantic Elvis Phuong be fascinated and decide to stop his love adventures with the woman named Le Hoa?

- The first time I met Le Hoa, I felt like I was struck by "love at first sight". That look, that charming smile made me sob. I clearly remember the evening Le Hoa invited me to her house to eat porridge. It was a burnt bowl of porridge but I felt extremely warm inside.

After eating, I found an excuse to sleep over at Le Hoa's house. Even though it was just a nap on a thin sheet in the living room, I still remember it for decades.

When I returned to California, for several days, Le Hoa's face, smile, and figure kept lingering in my mind. So a few days later, I invited Le Hoa to California to listen to me sing. We fell in love and developed feelings for each other from then on.

Now, when I tell this story, many people will probably think, "I'm good at flattering my wife." But what can I do? That fateful meeting, that moment is something I remember forever after more than 40 years.

Entering our 43rd year together, what does this milestone mean to you and your wife?

- I am grateful that in our 43rd year, my husband and I still have each other, "inseparable" in both work and life.

Le Hoa not only supported and encouraged me but also took care of me every step of the way. I could not find a second person who would always stand by my side like Le Hoa. I truly hope that for the rest of my life, I will always have my wife by my side and that the one who will take me to my final resting place is my wife.

I often jokingly say that before I leave, I will say "I love you wife" and sing a few lines before closing my eyes.

Talented, romantic artists are often labeled as "playboys". After more than 4 decades together, have Elvis Phuong and his wife ever been jealous or had a third person interfere?

- Everyone thinks artists are "flirtatious" so many people misunderstand me as well. However, in my married life, I am always aware of my responsibility to my family.

The most important thing in my life is being able to sing, and the luckiest thing in my life is meeting a wife who always understands and sympathizes with my passion.

The audience admires the warm and happy marriage of Elvis Phuong and Le Hoa. But in those 40 years, have the two ever had bad times?

- I can confirm that we have never had that happen. Whenever we have problems or are angry with each other, my husband and I always talk frankly to each other and never quarrel or raise our voices.

If something sad happens, we both usually "keep quiet" but after a while we become happy again. After that, we choose a day when we are both happy and comfortable to bring up the old story to give advice and reflect together.

I believe that the day we came together was a happy day, so we will try to maintain this for the rest of our lives. For over 40 years, the couple has mostly laughed and rarely cried.

First Reveal About 4 Children

Besides his successful career and happy marriage, the audience is also very curious about Elvis Phuong's family and children - something he has never shared before?

- I rarely share about my personal life because I want to keep my family private. For artists, I think it is enough to let the audience know what they sing and where they perform. Therefore, many people wonder why I don't mention children.

I have four children. Two sons and a daughter with my ex-wife - she died in a traffic accident in 1970. Le Hoa and I have one son, over 40 years old this year, unmarried. My children all live in the US.

How have Elvis Phuong and his wife balanced the relationship between their biological children and stepchildren over the years?

- When my children were 7-8 years old, I brought them to France to live, then brought them back to the US until now. Their mother passed away early, so the responsibility of worrying and taking care of them fell on me. From the time they were young until they were adults, I always tried to give them a full life.

Now, my children are all 40-50 years old, they have families and have given me grandchildren. I think taking care of my children and settling down is my responsibility.

Now they have their own homes and careers so I don't have to worry anymore. Whenever they have difficulties, I will support them.

Despite having many children and grandchildren, Elvis Phuong and his wife chose to live an independent life in their old age?

- My husband and I believe that children have their own lives and worries. My wife and I are still healthy and can take care of each other without bothering our children. We also have savings for our old age and have our own homes in Vietnam and the US, so we can live wherever we want.

My husband and I do not care about our children showing filial piety. Just calling them from time to time to ask "How are you, Mom and Dad?" makes me happy. Every year, on holidays or on the anniversary of grandparents' death, my husband, children and grandchildren gather together. The family atmosphere is always happy and harmonious.

Having had heart surgery and faced a near-death situation, instead of choosing a comfortable life and resting, Elvis Phuong still works hard at performing. Why is that?

- At the age of 53, I went through a critical period and had to have heart surgery. The doctor warned me that I could not continue singing. After hearing that, tears streamed down my face on the hospital bed. Luckily, thanks to God, I "survived the disaster" and was able to continue singing. For me, to live is to sing. Before I leave, I will hold my wife's hand and sing a few lines before closing my eyes (laughs).

I feel that thanks to God, I am still healthy and sing regularly. Even after the heart surgery, I find that I sing even better. Once I get on stage, the music starts, I have to sing over 15 songs before I get off. I hate singing 1-2 songs!

At the age of nearly 80, Elvis Phuong still sings live very well, while many young singers today sing over and lip-sync. What do you think about this?

- Everyone has their own path, so I don't want to give my opinion or criticize anyone. As for my professional perspective, once I step on stage, I have to sing live 100%, I'm not used to lip-syncing. If I don't have the strength to sing live anymore, I'll go home and sing for my wife (laughs).

Other artists often take on students to train, instruct or find successors, but Elvis Phuong seems to have none?

- I don't think about that. My son still sings my music sometimes. My children also have a talent for singing and playing instruments, but none of them follow the profession, most of them have other jobs.

Recently, the trend of combining veteran artists with young artists has received positive response from the audience. Does Elvis Phuong think that one day he will also collaborate with young artists on stage?

- When we go singing, we meet and greet each other. I haven't thought about collaborating yet. I think it's easier for each person to sing their own music.

With a brilliant career and a happy married life, what is Elvis Phuong still worried about?

- When I first came to America, I was still financially burdened, having to take care of my youngest sibling and other children in the family. Now I only have to worry about my youngest child who is not married yet.

My life is now stable and comfortable. Above all, I am very happy that I can still sing. My only concern is the wish to live long with my wife. If I am not healthy enough to sing, I still hope to live to 104 years old.

Thanks to famous singer Elvis Phuong for the chat!
