As the 2024 US election campaign enters its final stages, the Democratic campaign is exploiting candidate Trump's latest statements to attack his Republican opponent.
Internal enemy?
In an interview with Fox News on October 13, Mr. Trump said he was not too concerned about the risk of a repeat of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol on Election Day, or the threat from foreign powers. Instead, he warned that we need to be aware of the actions of "far-left lunatics."
Mr. Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event in Pennsylvania on October 14.
"I think that, if necessary, this problem can be handled easily by mobilizing the National Guard, or if absolutely necessary, invoking the military," the Republican candidate added.
Mr. Trump's statement immediately became a new "weapon" for the Democratic Party's election campaign. At a rally in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on October 14, US Vice President Kamala Harris warned voters in the battleground state that Mr. Trump intended to take revenge on Americans who did not vote for him on Election Day, November 5. According to her, Mr. Trump considered those who disagreed with his opinions as "enemies" and could attack journalists who reported unfavorable news about him, and election officials who refused to manipulate the results in his favor. She concluded that her Republican opponent was increasingly "unstable and out of control."
In addition, Mr. Ian Sams, spokesman and campaign adviser for Ms. Harris, argued that any American should be wary of the Republican candidate's statement.
"Trump is suggesting that there are fellow Americans who are 'enemies' worse than foreign powers, and he's saying we need to mobilize the military to deal with them," CNN quoted Sams as saying. Harris' campaign quickly aired a new ad that repeated Trump's "enemy within" phrase.
In an editorial on October 14, The Washington Post headlined "Mr. Trump wants to punish all enemies, not just immigrants." The article also analyzed with concern that Mr. Trump seems to be trying to punish those who disagree with him.
White House warns Iran
While Trump appears unconcerned about foreign interference, a senior administration official said the White House has warned the Iranian government to stop any plots against Trump, Reuters reported. The official, who was not named, said President Joe Biden receives regular reports on threats from Tehran. At Biden's direction, the US has sent a message to the highest levels of the Tehran government, demanding that Iran stop any plots against Trump and former US officials.
Iran has denied any interference in US affairs. On the contrary, the Tehran government has accused the US of meddling in its affairs for decades, from the 1953 attempt to overthrow Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh to the 2020 assassination of Quds Force Commander General Qassem Soleimani. It was Mr. Trump who, as US President, directed the attack on General Soleimani.
US officials stressed that Washington considers any Iranian plot to assassinate Mr. Trump an act of war.
Trump asks to move hush money case to federal court
On October 14, the lawyers representing Donald Trump asked a judge of the Manhattan Court of Appeals to transfer the case of paying hush money to a porn star to federal court, according to Reuters. In May, a Manhattan criminal court ruled that Trump was guilty of 34 counts related to the accusation of falsifying business records in the hush money case. Then, on September 3, District Judge Alvin Hellerstein refused to transfer the case to federal court.
In the new motion, Mr. Trump’s lawyers cited the Supreme Court’s July 1 ruling that Mr. Trump could not be prosecuted for actions he took as president. Under U.S. law, civil or criminal cases against officials can be transferred to federal court if they relate to their role in office.
