Many people believe that the herb epimedium has the effect of helping to improve erectile dysfunction. I would like to ask for expert advice. (Tuan, 38 years old, Hanoi)

Horny goat weed has many other names such as bull horn flower, lung kinh thao, coptis chinensis... This is a herb containing the active ingredient icariin, which has been proven to be beneficial for people with erectile dysfunction.
In principle, when sexually stimulated, the body secretes nitric oxide, which increases the synthesis of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), causing vasodilation, increasing blood flow to the penis, leading to an erection. In people with erectile dysfunction, the protein enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) interferes with nitric oxide and cGMP, obstructing blood flow to the penile arteries, making it impossible for the penis to become erect.
The active ingredient icariin in epimedium inhibits the activity of PDE5, allowing blood to flow to the penis and creating an erection. However, epimedium may not work for everyone. Using epimedium may also lead to side effects such as nosebleeds, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or adverse interactions with other medications. Taking large amounts suddenly can lead to spasms and breathing problems.
In addition, research on the effects of epimedium on humans is limited, mainly animal studies.
If you are experiencing symptoms of erectile dysfunction and are looking for natural solutions, you may consider red ginseng, hormone therapy, acupuncture, lifestyle changes, and increased physical activity such as exercise. However, all methods should be consulted with a doctor.
