Epimedium, also known by various other names such as ox horn flower, lung herb, and Coptis root, is an herb containing the active ingredient icariin, which has been shown to be beneficial for people with erectile dysfunction.

In principle, during sexual stimulation, the body releases nitric oxide, which increases the synthesis of circulating guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), causing vasodilation and increased blood flow to the penis, leading to an erection. In people with erectile dysfunction, the enzyme protein phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) interferes with nitric oxide and cGMP, hindering blood flow to the penile arteries and preventing an erection.

The active ingredient icariin in Epimedium inhibits the activity of PDE5, which allows blood to flow to the penis, causing an erection. However, Epimedium may not be effective for everyone. Using Epimedium can also lead to side effects such as nosebleeds, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or adverse interactions with other medications. Sudden, large doses can lead to spasms and respiratory problems.

Furthermore, research on the effects of Epimedium on humans is limited, mainly consisting of studies on animals.
