Microscopic images show microplastic particles inside male reproductive tissue
IJIR: Your Sexual Medicine Journal (IJIR: Your Sexual Medicine Journal) published a report on June 19 showing that a team of researchers led by expert Ranjith Ramasamy of the University of Miami (USA) found 7 different types of microplastic particles in male genital tissue samples of 4 out of 5 different men.
Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic, ranging in size from less than 5 mm to 1 micrometer. They form during the breakdown of plastic objects.
Some microplastics can enter the cells and tissues of human organs. And scientists are gathering more evidence than ever that microplastics are present inside the human body.
Expert Ramasamy said it was not surprising to find microplastic particles in male genitals because this is an organ with a high concentration of blood vessels.
Tissue samples in the report were obtained from individuals diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) and treated at the University of Miami Hospital between August and September 2023.
Seven types of microplastics were found in four of the five samples, mainly the two most common plastics: polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP).
Ramasamy said the next step is to investigate the link between microplastics and erectile dysfunction in men, thereby finding more effective treatments for this condition and issuing warnings about the health risks caused by microplastics entering the human body.
