(Fatherland) - With its unique cultural features, brocade and traditional costumes of the Van Kieu ethnic group, Pa Co promises to be a unique tourism product for the western region of Quang Tri province in the near future.
At the 2024 Quang Tri Provincial Ethnic Minority Congress held in Dong Ha City recently, the display space of brocade and traditional costumes of the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic groups made a strong impression on visitors. These are booths of individuals who have made many contributions to preserving and promoting the value of brocade weaving and traditional costumes of these two ethnic groups in Quang Tri province.

The brocade and traditional costumes of the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic groups stand out for their diversity and uniqueness in style. The costumes are often characterized by many elaborate motifs, demonstrating the rich imagination and skillful hands of the people. Not only are they worn on the body, traditional costumes also vividly reflect the cultural identity of the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic groups living in the Truong Son mountain range in general and in Quang Tri province in particular.
In recent times, the western region of Quang Tri province has promoted the development of eco-tourism, community tourism, and agricultural tourism. Many unique tourism models are known to domestic and foreign tourists. Along with promoting the strengths of natural conditions, localities are also effectively exploiting human potential with the characteristic cultural identity of ethnic minorities such as Van Kieu and Pa Co. In particular, brocade weaving and traditional costumes are among the products that receive the attention of tourists.

Having products participating in the exhibition space, Ms. Ho Thi Hoa My (Owner of Hoa My Mountain Specialties) shared that tourists when visiting the mountainous districts in the West of Quang Tri province often ask questions and have a need to buy products related to brocade and traditional costumes of ethnic minorities. However, in reality, these products are still in a potential state, not really accessible to many tourists. To turn this into a tourism product, it is necessary to have exhibition and introduction spaces at tourist destinations. This not only promotes the cultural beauty of ethnic groups but also contributes to creating income for the people.
"In addition to traditional costumes, if we know how to innovate and create more, turning the brocades of the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic groups into products such as handkerchiefs, scarves, handbags, etc., these will be very unique souvenirs that tourists can bring back. This promises to be a tourist product that attracts visitors in the future," Ms. Hoa My contributed her opinion.
Having made many contributions to preserving the traditional brocade weaving craft of ethnic minorities, artisan Ho Van Hoi (Pa Nho village, Khe Sanh town, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province) said that how to promote brocade weaving products to a large number of tourists is the desire not only of him but also of many Van Kieu and Pa Co people.

Born and raised in the Truong Son Mountains, artisan Ho Van Hoi was very concerned and regretful when many cultural features of his people were gradually being lost. Among them, the traditional brocade weaving craft. Faced with this situation, for nearly 30 years, he has spent a lot of time researching and studying. After mastering the craft, he traveled to villages in Dakrong and Huong Hoa districts to teach it to the villagers. Up to now, there have been dozens of traditional brocade weaving classes directly taught by artisan Ho Van Hoi. Many women who have been taught the craft have been able to weave beautiful brocades themselves and teach others.
According to artisan Ho Van Hoi, preserving the craft is difficult, but how to keep the traditional brocade weaving craft alive is also a very difficult "problem". To solve this problem, it is necessary to find an outlet for the products. In the past, he and everyone have applied many ways to promote such as posting products on social networks; participating in exhibition and introduction events; bringing brocade weaving to serve visitors and experiencers... Thereby, it has attracted the attention of many people. Currently, there are more orders coming to artisan Ho Van Hoi and those working in the craft.

Artisan Ho Van Hoi said that to preserve, maintain and promote the traditional brocade weaving profession, the best way is to bring the profession and its products into daily life. If in the past, weaving mainly only made dresses and shirts to wear, today it is necessary to diversify products such as tablecloths, curtains, decorative items, etc.
"We must somehow make traditional brocade weaving products of ethnic minorities accessible to everyone, so that everyone can use them. Only then can artisans make a living from their profession and attract more people to participate, especially the young generation," artisan Ho Van Hoi shared.
