CHANGES IN ADMISSION COMBINATION

Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that from 2025, the school plans to continue to consider admission based on graduation exam scores based on subjects prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training. In parallel, the school will consider the results of the specialized competency assessment exam organized by the school itself, with a higher quota ratio than at present. With the graduation exam results, the school still plans to consider the average score of a combination of 3 subjects, including 3 independent subjects or 2 subjects including the main subject multiplied by a coefficient of 2. "For specific subjects, the school needs more data from actual students studying subjects in the new general education program and the school's own exam results for analysis and evaluation," Master Quoc shared.

In general comments on university admissions, Master Quoc said that there will be many changes in admission combinations when new subjects appear in the 2018 General Education Program. Universities will have to develop plans that match the current training context of high school students in order to recruit candidates suitable for the school and the industry. Therefore, Master Quoc advised students to feel secure with their subject choices right from grade 10.

Nha Trang University has established a council and a research team for the 2018 General Education Program and plans to develop an enrollment plan for 2025 onwards. Dr. To Van Phuong, Head of the School's Training Department, said that the school's enrollment orientation must first provide good orientation for students in choosing high school subjects. Therefore, the school plans to build an admission combination consisting of 2 compulsory subjects of the high school graduation exam plus 1-2 subjects from the optional subjects to suit the specific training major. In particular, the school considers the optional subjects based on the actual number of students studying in the previous high school program.

COMBINE MULTIPLE CRITERIA

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, also said that from 2025, the school plans to maintain the stable admission method but adjust the admission combination to suit the 2018 general education program and the high school graduation exam. As currently done, most majors are admitted using 4 subject combinations and each combination contains 3 subjects. However, from 2025 onwards, each combination may still include 3 subjects but the number of combinations used for admission to each major may be less. In particular, the general spirit is that in addition to 2 compulsory subjects, schools will consider adding elective subjects to suit the training characteristics of the major. For example, for the group of technical technology majors, at least 2 subjects required in the admission combination will include math and physics.

"The university's admission method not only serves the selection but also needs to be suitable for the curriculum and have a wide enough coverage to create opportunities for students to participate in the admission process. Therefore, universities need complete data on the situation of students registering to choose subjects in the new curriculum to have a basis for building appropriate selection methods, especially in building subject combinations," said Dr. Nhan.

From 2022, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology will use a new and main admission method combining many criteria: results of the competency assessment test, high school graduation exam, high school academic scores and other competencies (certificates, awards). Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Thang, Head of the school's Training Department, said that by 2025, the school plans to maintain this admission principle and only make minor adjustments to better suit the new program's reality.

RESTRICTED "STRANGE COMBINATIONS"?

Master Cao Quang Tu, Director of Admissions at Saigon International University, said that the 2025 high school graduation exam plan with 4 subjects will limit the "exceptional" situation that still occurs every year with the concepts of "strange combinations" and "unusual combinations" that confuse candidates.

Master Tu said that universities also need to select combinations according to the new plan, and propose solutions to build university admission processes to accurately reflect the abilities and qualities of students, not just based on the results of the high school graduation exam.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tran Huu Duy, Head of the Department of Dalat University, said that the plan to have fewer subjects in the high school graduation exam would be better in terms of benefits because there are currently too many subject combinations, making it very confusing. If there is any change, according to Dr. Duy, the school will adjust the subject combinations to suit the high school exam plan, but the consideration of academic records will remain unchanged.

According to Master Tran Hai Nam, Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, in recent years, the combination of admission subjects is no longer as important in deciding admission results as in previous years, because schools all use many admission methods such as considering the results of capacity assessment, considering academic records... "Therefore, changing the exam subjects will not affect the admissions of universities too much".

Candidates are proactive in choosing a career early on.

Dr. Vo Van Tuan, Vice Principal of Van Lang University, said that if candidates take the graduation exam in 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: math, literature and 2 elective subjects, it will not only reduce pressure but also give them the initiative in career orientation from the beginning.

"This allows students to focus their time on subjects that match their career orientation. For example, most majors at schools have a combination of English subjects. In a situation where a foreign language is not a compulsory subject and students do not initially choose English to take the exam, later if they want to apply for a major with combination A or A1, for example, there will not be as many opportunities as when English is a compulsory subject. Therefore, students must clearly define their career goals from the beginning when choosing the exam subject," Dr. Tuan commented.
