Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on January 16, Chinese Deputy Minister of Transport Li Yang said that this year's Chunyun (from January 26 to March 5) will have structural changes, with 80% of trips being made by people themselves by car.

It is expected that about 9 billion people will make inter-provincial and inter-city trips, such as returning home for Tet and traveling across the country: "This year, passenger traffic will reach a record high. This is reflected in two aspects. On the one hand, there will be about 7.2 billion self-driving trips, on the other hand, the number of commercial passengers on railways, highways, waterways and civil aviation will reach 1.8 billion, a total of 9 billion people."

China's Ministry of Transport predicts that highway traffic during the 2024 Chunyun period will be "extremely large." The highway network is expected to see an average daily traffic volume of 37.2 million vehicles, up 7.5 percent year-on-year. The peak is expected to occur on February 17 (the eighth day of the first lunar month).

This year, China continues to apply the policy of free highways for vehicles for 9 days from 0:00 on February 9 (New Year's Eve) to 24:00 on February 17 (8th day of Lunar New Year).

Regarding railways, Mr. Huang Xin, Director of the Passenger Transport Department of China Railway Corporation, said that during the Lunar New Year this year, the country's railway network is expected to transport 480 million passengers, an average of 12 million people per day. He pointed out that this year's Chunyun will increase by 37.9% compared to last year, and by 18% compared to 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic).

Liang Nan, director of the Transportation Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said that during the 2024 Spring Festival holiday, the number of civil aviation passenger transport is expected to exceed 80 million, up 9.8% from 2019 and up 44.9% from 2023.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the number of guaranteed flights during this year's Spring Festival holiday will average about 16,500 daily, basically the same as in 2019 and up 24% from 2023.

“Chunyun” is the world's largest spring migration that takes place in China every Lunar New Year.

The 2024 Chunyun takes place amid the rising number of acute respiratory infections in China caused by various pathogens. The huge influx of people during Chunyun raises concerns about the epidemic situation.

The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of China said that due to the sharp increase in travel, the Covid-19 epidemic is expected to increase during the Lunar New Year holiday, and respiratory diseases will continue to show a trend of intermingling or co-circulating in many places across the country. The agency affirmed that it will prepare medical resources in advance and do a good job of epidemic prevention and control to cope with the above situation.
