Faced with new challenges from the global market, Vietnamese enterprises need to be proactive and promptly find solutions to turn difficulties into opportunities.

Exports face challenges

At the beginning of 2025, the world economy continues to develop in a complex and unpredictable manner, especially trade tensions between major economies. This reality is causing concerns that it may negatively impact the business activities of Vietnamese enterprises, as well as the export of goods may face many major risks and challenges.

In this context, speaking with the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Dr. To Hoai Nam - General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises - expressed his opinion that Vietnam is a country with a large economic openness, therefore, global trade tensions will cause Vietnamese export enterprises to face new obstacles, such as increasingly strict control of the origin of products and goods from the international market.

Dr. To Hoai Nam said that one of the products that will face more difficulties in the process of promoting exports and expanding markets is wood and wood products. Because wood and wood products are products that have been continuously investigated for origin fraud, they have been subject to high export taxes. In addition, with strict control of origin, textile and garment enterprises are forced to source raw materials from countries other than China, leading to the possibility of having to increase costs by 10-15% depending on some specific raw materials.

Faced with the challenges, the leaders of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises noted that Vietnamese export enterprises have also recognized the difficulties early, and have quickly developed business scenarios, including preparing documents to quickly prove the production process to proactively respond to regulations and investigations from export markets. " The authorities have also promptly issued warnings and directions for the opportunities and challenges facing export activities in 2025 and the coming time to the business community " - Dr. To Hoai Nam said.

Diversify export markets

However, in the coming time, Mr. To Hoai Nam emphasized that with the participation and signing of many Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), export enterprises need to increase the exploitation of this advantage to diversify export markets.

Accordingly, in addition to ensuring growth focus on large markets such as the United States, Europe (EU), Mexico, etc., businesses need to plan to approach other markets, which may not be as effective as large markets, but will help balance exports in terms of the ability to respond and compensate for higher revenue and output.

“When the market is diversified, businesses will have the ability and capacity to cope with fluctuations in trade policies of countries, export markets will be better; from there, the sustainability factor will also be promoted, better for businesses ” - Dr. To Hoai Nam analyzed.

In addition, according to Dr. To Hoai Nam, businesses need to continue to invest heavily in innovation and production technology so that their products and goods meet higher standards and meet the stricter regulations of the international market, including demanding markets such as the EU and the United States.

At the same time, the leader of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises said that increasing the application of digital technology in administration, production and business management to reduce production costs and other costs to the maximum level is extremely important. Thereby, helping businesses improve their competitiveness, standardize and maintain their market share; and seize growth when opportunities arise.

"Businesses need to regularly and closely monitor trade policies of countries and export markets such as tax policies, regulations on the origin of goods, food safety for consumers. Along with that are policies related to trade defense " - Dr. To Hoai Nam said.

In particular, to maintain and stabilize export activities and achieve the growth target set for 2025, Dr. To Hoai Nam emphasized that functional agencies, ministries and branches, including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the system of trade offices will play a very important role.

Specifically, the Ministry of Industry and Trade needs to promptly have strategic directions for market development; quickly support businesses to exploit advantages from signed FTAs, especially markets that have just signed FTAs. At the same time, support the business community in the process of approaching and exploiting export markets; accompany businesses in the face of trade defense investigations - one of the measures and tools being used by many countries for imported goods.

On the side of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, Dr. To Hoai Nam said that this agency will promote legal consultancy, enhance information connection on international trade policies, trade promotion activities, and exports to the business community.

In particular, the Association will step up support for businesses to participate in the domestic supply chain, gradually promoting the number of businesses producing domestic raw materials to reduce dependence on imports. Thereby, responding to and avoiding being investigated for origin and imposing high taxes from the export market ” - Dr. To Hoai Nam informed.

Dr. To Hoai Nam - General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises : Changes in global trade policies are posing new difficulties and challenges for businesses. However, in the face of risks, businesses need to find solutions to respond effectively.
