$74,500 (VND1.8 billion) was paid for the photo of Nastassja Kinski and the Python signed by the photographer at Christie's auction in 2008. That amount cannot fully describe the widespread popularity of the photo of model Nastassja Kinski.
Originating from the magazine cover, the photo was continuously printed, becoming a poster with a record number of copies at that time (2 million copies). This is also the inspiration for many later works, including the Vanity Fair magazine cover of actress Jennifer Lawrence.
Lie still for 2 hours waiting for the python to crawl on you
The 1981 fashion shoot for US Vogue featured photographer Richard Avedon and model Kinski. Both were at the peak of their careers. However, the first shoots were somewhat boring, no different from regular photos, leaving both photographer and model in a bad mood.
Stylist Polly Mellen recalls the team was trying to come up with something to make a statement. She asked Kinski for suggestions. “A boa constrictor,” the model replied.
It was a groundbreaking idea at the time. But getting the python to cooperate with the photo shoot was not easy. Despite the trainer's coaxing, the animal refused to move on Kinski's body, causing the crew to lose patience. The female model had to lie motionless on the cement floor for 2 hours.
Suddenly, the python slithered through Kinski's curves and crawled up to her head. The creature bared its fangs before flicking its tongue out and licking the ear of the model, who lay surprisingly still. "This is it," Avedon whispered, capturing the perfect moment in a split second.
That quick snapshot shows Kinski's timeless sensuality and control of his body.
Started career with scandalous role at age 14
According to Artland , the photo shoot with the python was not the first time Kinski had gone nude. Born in 1961 in Berlin (Germany), she started modeling as a child and had her first film role in The Wrong Move by director Wim Wenders. In this film, Kinski was only 14 years old and exposed the upper half of her body - something that was scandalous at the time. Two years later, she took on the lead role in the horror film To the Devil a Daughter with a more daring image: completely nude.
At a party, Kinski met director Roman Polanski, who encouraged her to study acting in the US. Rumour has it that the two began a romantic relationship in 1976, when Kinski was 15 and Polanski was 43. However, Kinski denied this to the Guardian : "There was flirtation. There may have been seduction, but nothing more. He respected me."
In 1979, she starred in Polanski's film Tess and won the Golden Globe for Best New Female Star.
Kinski subsequently appeared in over 60 American and European films, including Wim Wenders' critically acclaimed hit Paris, Texas . She became a symbol of sexual beauty, reaching her peak when she met renowned photographer Richard Avedon to shoot Nastassja Kinski and the Python.
Although nude roles gave Kinski a chance to enter the arts, she later said she was exploited by the entertainment industry from a young and naive age.
Kinski has three children from different relationships. Her first son, Aljosha, was born in 1984 to co-star Vincent Spano. She later married filmmaker Ibrahim Moussa and had a daughter, Sonja, in 1986. From 1992 to 1995, Kinski lived with musician Quincy Jones and had a youngest daughter, Kenya, in 1993.
In the following years, she continued to have relationships with a series of other producers, directors, and actors.
