Using a fashion photography perspective, while also adding 'vitality' to the ao dai in the lives of Vietnamese people, photographer Kien Can carried out the project Ao dai returns to the homeland.
Photographer Kien Can (real name Pham Phuc Loi) is loved by many people for his unique photography talent. He is affectionately known as the person who keeps memories of famous fashion shows.
Kien Can takes photos of many famous people, but in the Ao Dai project in his hometown , he stands facing the camera, taking on the role of a model.
Connecting cultures through Ao Dai
Kien Can told Tuoi Tre Online that every time he returned to his hometown during Tet, he often received compliments on his beautiful ao dai, so he had the idea of taking a photo series of ao dai right in his hometown of An Giang.
"Through my love for Ao Dai and my homeland, I hope to promote the rustic and simple beauty, as well as the affection of the people of the West through the project.
I see the Ao Dai become more lively, fashionable, and artistic through every angle of the photo, while also bringing a deeper experience to young people.
Above all, I want the ao dai to become a widely used everyday outfit, worn more often" - Kien Can shared.
From a photographic perspective, the Kien Can team told a vivid story about the ao dai through visual language.
Viewers feel the ao dai is not stylized but very familiar, expressing the profound value of the ao dai which is connecting culture, connecting people, connecting national values, creating the soul of Vietnam.
Taking photos of Ao Dai is a familiar topic but the most difficult to exploit because it is easy to fall into a rut or be broken in a unique way. Ao Dai has traditional values, showing the sophistication of the designer. If the photographer does not take good photos, it can easily create an uncomfortable feeling for the viewer and not fully describe the creative spirit in each design.

Ao dai enters life
In the first photo series, Kien Can chose the background as the corners around a house in the countryside (Chau Phu district, An Giang province).
It is the river, the ferry, the boat, the rice fields, the rustic shops… All of them express Vietnamese identity in a sincere and intimate way.
In the second photo series, he chose famous tourist destinations in Tri Ton, Bay Nui... of An Giang province to take photos, creating a connection between destinations.
In addition to the silk road, the rows of palm trees are typical architectural works such as: Tri Ton Heaven Gate, To Mountain Elephant Head Rock, ancient Khmer pagoda...
These places become more beautiful, recalling childhood memories through each angle, light, composition...
As a former lecturer in culture and tourism, Kien Can has experience in organizing images. The photo series not only shows the story of culture and tourism… but also has a strong fashion feel.
That's why, without captions, viewers can still feel the spirit and message that the crew conveys through each photo.
"Taking photos of Ao Dai in ancient architectural works, pagodas... shows the integration of Ao Dai into architecture, the strong connection in the landscape. Ao Dai also spreads the national spirit, is the soul of the Vietnamese people" - Kieng Can expressed.
Kien Can said that in the near future, he will arrange to carry out the project in provinces and cities across the country, going into every street and alley to record the breath of daily life of the ao dai. In particular, he will invite famous people to join him.
"A designer who loves shirts will have enough thinking and sophistication to design unique and trendy shirts.
Younger generations will continue to inherit and have more inspiration to promote and preserve instead of worrying about judging and imposing that the ao dai must be this way or that way. The designer does not lose the inherent identity of the ao dai" - Kieng Can shared.
