Hoa Binh Company Limited has just proposed to the Prime Minister to build a highway overpass in the Mekong Delta with an investment rate of about 12 million VND/m2 of highway.
Overcoming the shortage of sand for highway embankment
Before proposing to the Prime Minister a solution to build a highway viaduct (building an elevated highway using a bridge on PRC high-strength concrete piles), in September 2023, Hoa Binh Company Limited (Hoa Binh Group) surveyed the technology and experience of building highway viaducts in the following countries: Germany, China, and Indonesia.
Next, from February to June 2024, Hoa Binh Group invited design consulting companies to examine and design, and signed a contract to test the construction of a 2-storey overpass using PRC high-strength concrete pile bridge technology in the Xuan Cau - Lach Huyen duty-free zone, Hai Phong City.
This experimental viaduct highway section was built on weak soil in Lach Huyen port area, with the first floor length of about 550m, the second floor of about 100m, the viaduct width of 10.5m (Van bridge road).
The construction time of the pilot project was only 2 months. After completion, the pilot project was tested and inspected with results meeting the current bridge design requirements of TCVN 11823-1:2017; prestressed centrifugal concrete piles according to TCVN 7888:2014; prestressed plate girders DIN QAA 4.0.
According to Dr. Tran Ba Viet - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Building Materials and Vice President of the Vietnam Concrete Association, the technology of constructing elevated highways using bridge decks on high-strength PRC concrete piles is being widely applied in many countries such as Germany, China, and Indonesia.
In the context of the current nationwide shortage of sand and soil for highway embankment, Mr. Viet believes that building elevated highways using the slab-on-pile bridge method, combined with the solution of high-strength concrete U-beam HPC, ultra-high-strength concrete UHPC for locations requiring large spans, will be more effective than the traditional solution of using soil and sand for embankment construction when building highways, especially in areas with weak ground such as the Mekong Delta.
Investment rate 12 million VND/ m2 of expressway viaduct
In addition to the trial construction of a two-story overpass expressway in the Xuan Cau duty-free zone, Hoa Binh Group has recently spent its own money to hire consultants to survey the depth of pile driving when building expressways in regions across the country.
Survey results show that the pile driving depth when implementing the expressway viaduct solution in some areas is as follows: Lach Huyen, Hai Phong City 35m, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Hanoi areas from 20-22m, Ninh Binh from 10-12m, in the Mekong Delta from 25-50m.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Duong, Chairman of Hoa Binh Group, shared that with the technology of building elevated highways using bridge slabs on high-strength concrete piles PRC, depending on each geological area the highway runs through, the load-bearing capacity and pile depth will be calculated and designed in accordance with Vietnamese standards.
Mr. Duong also said that with the solution of building the expressway viaduct, there will be no time wasted waiting for subsidence when filling the expressway foundation, taking full advantage of precast PRC piles, hollow panels with precast ribs to shorten construction time. This is a fast construction solution, environmentally friendly and the estimated investment cost is about 12 million VND/ m2 of expressway.
Previously, in a document sent to Hoa Binh Group in July 2024, the Ministry of Transport also highly appreciated the enterprise's proactive research and proposal to use overpass solutions for traffic construction projects.
Hoa Binh Group's proposal is a technical solution that has been piloted and tested on a small scale. Preliminary assessments show that it has many advantages such as fast construction and is environmentally friendly, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The Ministry has also assigned the Institute of Transport Science and Technology to preside over and coordinate with Hoa Binh Group to clarify the contents related to the group's proposed solutions.
