(Dan Tri) - English teachers believe that candidates who have been trained in deep reading comprehension and logical thinking and analysis in IELTS practice tests will have an advantage in the 2025 high school graduation exam in English.
Last week, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the reference exam for high school graduation in 2025. This is the first year this exam will be implemented according to the 2018 General Education Program.
Like other exams, the English exam from 2025 has completely changed the structure of the exam and the format of the questions. The questions focus on the candidates' reading comprehension skills, information analysis and logical arrangement of ideas.
In particular, the content of the grammar and vocabulary test no longer includes short questions but is integrated into the types of exercises and is all in the form of reading comprehension. This requires candidates to have good thinking ability.
In the official reading comprehension section, the challenge for candidates is to do 18 questions instead of 12 questions like the old test. Notably, the test has many new types of questions such as: Rewriting sentences with different words, grammar and sentence structure while still maintaining the original meaning of the sentence; finding the right position to fill in a sentence so that it is logical; summarizing a paragraph; summarizing the whole text.
The group of teachers of the Hoc Mai system commented that the change in the structure and content of the exam increased the difficulty of the exam.
Each type of exercise has questions at the levels of recognition - understanding - application. However, students need to read the passage more carefully because if it were individual questions, students could only take a few seconds to choose the answer, but in the form of a passage, students will take more time because the sentences are long and have logical meaning.
"This is a challenge for students because they have to deal with 40 questions in the form of text passages in just 50 minutes.
At the same time, candidates cannot do the test by trick but need to learn correctly and understand; apply input knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary to handle the test under pressure of time and difficulty of the types of questions," the group of teachers commented.
Sharing the same view, the group of English teachers at Lomonosov Secondary and High School said that students who want to do the test with a good score or higher must have a deep understanding of semantics, advanced grammar, and a solid grasp of knowledge and skills in vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension.
The group of teachers predicts that average students will only get 3.5-4.5 points. Good students will get 5-6 points. To get 8 points or more, students need a long-term review schedule.
Notably, teachers believe that students who have practiced for international certificates such as IELTS will have an advantage because they have been trained in deep reading comprehension and logical thinking and analysis.
Ms. Nguyen Thi May, Head of the Foreign Language Group, said that schools will have to make adjustments in teaching and reviewing students in this subject.

Ms. NVH, an English teacher at a public high school, predicts that few candidates will choose English for the 2025 high school graduation exam due to the difficulty of the test.
"In previous years, candidates in the city chose English because the test was relatively easy to get a score of 8. However, with the 2025 reference test, students will be hesitant. If they do not study English well, it will be difficult for them to get a score of 8," Ms. H. commented.
However, Ms. H. also believes that the new exam has a positive point in that it encourages students to learn English in a more in-depth way, with higher academic application, serving university studies which require the ability to self-study and refer to foreign documents.
"Reading and understanding in-depth texts is a necessary skill for students in the future," Ms. H. affirmed.
The 2025 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 26-27, 2025. Candidates will take 4 subjects including 2 compulsory subjects of math and literature and 2 elective subjects. The elective subjects must be subjects that students have studied in 3 years of high school.
