For Vietnamese animation to develop

Signs of "prosperity" in animation

Recently, many animated film projects have been continuously released, showing signs of improvement for this genre. With meticulous quality and pure Vietnamese content, many Vietnamese animated films are conquering audiences. According to statistics from the Department of Cinema, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in the past 10 years, the growth of Vietnamese animated films has been quite good, bringing in up to 15% of the revenue of cinema. Notably, more and more films with historical themes are appearing.

There are 3 animated films including: "Dinh Tien Hoang De", a 2D paper-cut film, 30 minutes long; "Tieng gong nui Nua", a 30-minute animated film and "Anh hung nui Tan", a 3D film, 30 minutes long by Vietnam Animation Studio released in early 2024, which has attracted public attention. The National Short Film Review Council, Department of Cinema assessed that these are animated films with attractive scripts, invested in, researched elaborately, and magnificently by directors and artists.

There are more and more animated films about historical themes.

Besides the State units, many Vietnamese animation enterprises have also aimed to produce content to serve the international market, learning from models and then improving, applying 2D, 3D, Stop-motion technology to animation production technology and have been welcomed by the international market.

Typically, Sconnect Vietnam has developed 18 sets of animated characters, with a total production of more than 50,000 videos, released in many different languages. The most prominent of which is the Wolfoo animated series, attracting more than 30 billion views on YouTube, with most of the audience coming from the US, Europe, Asia and Vietnam... Or most recently, the 3D animated series "Trang Quynh in his silly days" co-produced by Alpha Animation Studio and Sconnect Vietnam, although newly aired, has received the love of children and the trust of parents.

Despite the strong growth and development, director and People's Artist Nguyen Ha Bac said: "The overall picture of the development of Vietnamese animated films today is still leaning towards market trends, with high entertainment value, gradually forgetting artistic films, traditional and historical Vietnamese cultural features. Commercial films, although attractive in terms of image and entertainment, earn a lot of profit, and contribute to the State's revenue, are still lacking in universal education."

Wolfoo animated series is loved by audiences at home and abroad.

Talking about this issue, Director of Vietnam Animation Studio, People's Artist Pham Ngoc Tuan shared: "This is an issue that animators are always concerned about and strive for within their capabilities. Animated films are a genre that requires investment not only in finance but also in technology, human resources... Therefore, with external resources, animated films are a genre that is very difficult to recover capital, so private companies will mainly invest in entertaining animated products on fast entertainment platforms. However, recently, private companies are also aiming to make more artistic animated films, with more Vietnamese national identity and not only showing on digital platforms but also aiming to make films shown in theaters, participating in international festivals. This is a positive signal for us to expect the strong development of Vietnamese animated films in the coming time".

Aiming to develop theatrical films

For many years, Vietnamese animators have been passionate and enthusiastic about the dream of bringing animated films to theaters, and that dream has been realized when at the end of 2023, Sconnect successfully released the animated film "Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island".

People's Artist Pham Ngoc Tuan said: "The successful release of the animated film "Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island" has marked a new beginning for Vietnamese animated films on the journey to conquer the big screen, as well as the international market. But along with that joy, animators will also have new worries and pressures about how to produce more animated films for theatrical release in the future as well as achieve quality on par with other countries in the world. Because to be able to produce an animated film for theatrical release is extremely difficult."

At the end of 2023, Sconnect successfully released the animated film "Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island" in theaters.

Also according to People's Artist Pham Ngoc Tuan, animated films shown in theaters require many factors. First, the script must be good and novel. It cannot just be an illustration of a fairy tale, telling about a historical figure in a documentary style, but must be attractive, have profound content, convey a clear message and have the breath of the times. The producer must have a uniform, high-quality workforce, modern equipment to meet technical requirements because films shown in theaters are different from those shown on television.

In addition, the cost of producing a basic theatrical animated film can range from 17-20 billion. For some animated films that require high technology and complex techniques, this number can be even higher. This is really a huge number compared to the current capacity of the Film Studio or small and medium enterprises in Vietnam.

Furthermore, the ability to recover capital is also a reason for animators to be concerned. In general, the majority of Vietnamese audiences still do not have much sympathy for domestic animation, plus fierce competition from high-quality animation products from animation powerhouses such as the US, Japan, China, and South Korea. Therefore, the risk in commercial exploitation is also quite large.

Faced with that situation, People's Artist Pham Ngoc Tuan said: "In order to produce more animated films for theatrical release in the coming time, it is necessary to have support and investment from the State's policies, not only in creating connections, cooperation, and markets, but also in tax policies and training human resources. If there is support and promotion from the State, along with cooperation with private enterprises, I think we will be able to produce many quality and attractive animated films for theatrical release for the audience.

At the same time, we also need the support of the audience, especially domestic audiences. The enthusiastic reception of Vietnamese audiences for animated films produced by Vietnamese people will be a strong motivation for filmmakers to constantly innovate and strive to create quality animated films, contributing to enhancing the position of Vietnamese animated films in the region and the world"./.
