This morning (June 24), Ms. Huynh Thi Ut Nho (living on Le Thi Hong Gam Street, Ward 5, Bac Lieu City, Bac Lieu Province) was busy packing up her belongings to move, swallowing her tears as she watched her savings over the years "drift" down the river.

According to Ms. Ut Nho, more than a week ago, the house showed signs of cracking. The climax was late on June 21, when her house began to sink, and a long crack appeared on the back wall…

“A lot of property was dragged into the river, causing heavy damage. Currently, my family of 6 has to stay at relatives and friends’ houses because the support money is not enough to rent a house,” said Ut Nho.

According to information from the Bac Lieu City People's Committee, the landslide on Le Thi Hong Gam Street that occurred on June 21 was 400m long, with 27 households affected. Of these, 3 households' houses were eroded into the river, the rest had cracked walls, tilted foundations, and subsidence.

The construction unit (Saigon 99 Traffic Joint Stock Company) and the supervising consultant unit (Hung Nam Investment and Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company) then inspected and recorded the scene, and agreed to support 3 households whose houses had collapsed into the river with 5 million VND/household.

By June 23, the landslide had extended to about 800m and affected 39 households. Of these, 10 households were severely affected and forced to evacuate.

According to initial assessments, local authorities determined that one of the causes of the landslide was the dredging of the Bac Lieu River. In addition, another cause was that some households built houses, drove piles and poured concrete floors encroaching on the riverbed.
