Currently, the upstream areas of the Tien River in Dong Thap are in flood season, water is flooding the fields, bringing with it many products of the flood season. Many markets in Dong Thap sell "flood season" products such as linh fish, crabs, snails, water lilies, and sesban flowers. The price of loach - a specialty fish - is 170,000-180,000 VND/kg.
This year, the flood in the upper Tien River in Dong Thap was larger, so the water level in the fields was higher than the same period last year, but the amount of aquatic products was somewhat less.
Currently, the upstream areas of the Tien River in Dong Thap are in flood season, water is flooding the fields, bringing with it many products of the flood season.
This is also the time when people are busy catching aquatic products and flood season products in the fields, increasing their income.
This year, after harvesting the Summer-Autumn rice crop, many fields in Hong Ngu district (Dong Thap) did not sow the Autumn-Winter rice crop but let the land rest during the flood season.
The manhole covers were opened, bringing water carrying heavy alluvium into the fields. This also helped to remove acidity and wash away alum, increasing the fertility of the fields, bringing aquatic resources.

According to VNA reporters, in the vast flooded fields in Thuong Thoi Hau A commune, from early morning, people were bustling in the fields catching fish, shrimp, crabs, snails... by setting traps, spreading nets, casting nets and many other methods.
According to local people, this year, the water level in the fields is higher than the same period last year but the amount of aquatic products is somewhat less.
During the flood season, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi in Thuong Thoi Hau A commune (Hong Ngu district, Dong Thap province) temporarily put aside farming to switch to the job of setting nets to catch fish in the fields.
From 3am, he sets up 30 nets (net sections), and at 9am he checks the nets. If he catches fish of low economic value (chot fish, linh fish), he saves them for his family's meals.
As for fish with high economic value (loach, snakehead fish, catfish), he sells them, earning an additional income of 100,000 - 200,000 VND/day.

To catch fish in the fields, Mr. Vo Phuoc Ty in Thuong Phuoc 2 commune sets up more than 20 nets, each net has an average length of 100m.
Every day, Mr. Ty goes to collect fish bait in the morning and afternoon and catches 50 - 70kg of various types of fish such as linh fish, thieu fish, perch, sac fish, long tong fish... to feed the fish ponds he is raising.
Thanks to that, the flood season has helped him reduce the cost of industrial feed for his farmed fish by an average of 1 million VND/day. If there is any leftover feed for the fish, he will sell it to those in need at the same price as bait fish, from 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, which also increases his income.
Mr. Luong Quang Huy in Thuong Thoi Hau A commune has extra income during the flood season by fishing for frogs.
It took him about 3 hours to catch 1 - 2kg. He used a long fishing rod, baited a frog but strangely, he didn't need a hook.
Mr. Huy said, all you need to do is tie the bait to a string, go around the canals, pay attention to observe the frogs floating near the shore and clicking the bait. When the frogs eat the bait, you just need to gently pull the fishing rod up and use a net to catch the frogs and then catch them again.

Along the border routes (bordering Cambodia), there are also many places to buy flood season specialties to meet people's needs.
Every flood season, Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem (in Thuong Lac commune, Hong Ngu district) temporarily stays in a hut in the middle of the field, more than 5km from her house, for convenience in buying and selling because people often catch seafood at night and bring it to sell at dawn.

Ms. Diem said that this year, most types of fish are more expensive than previous years. In particular, the price of loach is 170,000 - 180,000 VND/kg, 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg higher than last year.
On average, every day, she collects more than 1 ton of various types of freshwater fish such as linh fish, loach fish, thieu fish, dolphin fish, snakehead fish... to supply to some provinces in the West and Ho Chi Minh City.
"Customers' demand for all kinds of freshwater fish during the flood season is very high, they take as much as there is," said Ms. Diem.
Flood season is one of the characteristics of Dong Thap and some provinces in the Mekong Delta.
People in the upstream area of Dong Thap have adapted and lived with the floods. Every year, people look forward to the flood season with many special products and fertile alluvium for the rice fields.
