Sri Lanka will formally apply to join the BRICS group of major emerging economies at the organization's summit scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said on October 14, 2024.

During a meeting with diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo, Mr. Herath said that due to ongoing parliamentary elections, he and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake could not attend the conference.
Instead, the Deputy Foreign Minister will represent Sri Lanka and formally submit a request to join BRICS.
Minister Herath said he had sent letters to his counterparts in BRICS member countries to ask for support.
According to him, the South Asian country considers BRICS an effective partner to realize the aspiration for mutually beneficial cooperation, peace and development, through strengthening comprehensive multilateralism within the framework of the United Nations Charter.
The BRICS summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russian Federation from October 22-24.
Moscow will host more than 200 political, economic and social events, the main of which will be the BRICS Summit with the participation of heads of state.
On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, President Vladimir Putin is expected to hold 20 bilateral meetings with leaders of countries attending the conference.
The conference will discuss issues of energy and food security, the use of national currencies in bilateral and multilateral transactions, the expansion of BRICS membership and new forms of cooperation, cooperation in scientific research, technological innovation and environmental protection to facilitate sustainable development, cultural cooperation, people-to-people exchange, etc.
