Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of VNU-HCM, speaking at the opening ceremony

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, emphasized this at the 2024 opening ceremony held on the morning of October 20.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, in the historical process of building and defending the country, our ancestors always valued and used talented people with the philosophy "Talented people are the vital energy of the nation, when the vital energy is prosperous, the country will be strong and rise, when the vital energy is weak, the country will be weak and fall".

The legend of Saint Giong is perhaps the first evidence in the history of the nation about the appreciation of talented people. Nearly 1,000 years ago, the Ly Dynasty organized the first examination with the purpose of selecting talented people to participate in the country's administrative apparatus. After the success of the August Revolution, on November 20, 1946, Uncle Ho issued a notice "Looking for talented and virtuous people" in the Cuu Quoc Newspaper. With only 132 words, Uncle affirmed: "The country needs to be built. Construction requires talented people".

Looking at the world, the place that attracts more talent will be more prosperous.

The Director of VNU-HCM also said that in 1986, when Vietnam began its opening period, it was also the time to face the challenges of a backward agricultural country, heavily devastated by war, and experiencing a long period of subsidy and embargo mechanisms. University education, from management models to training, was not outside this subsidy mechanism. The training program was single-major, single-field; international integration was still very limited...

Vietnam is facing many new challenges. From nature are challenges of climate change and resource depletion. From humans are geopolitical challenges such as war, epidemics, rapid urbanization, and population aging. From breakthrough technology are advances in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor chips, biotechnology, and quantum; and from fierce competition between technological powers in the world and the region.

"In order not to be left behind, we have only one way: to overcome challenges with the advantage of human resources, science and technology and innovation. The country needs new generations of "Thanh Giong" to develop," Mr. Quan emphasized.

To be ready for the new era, reality sets new requirements, new qualities, new capacities for teachers and students. The Director of VNU-HCM hopes that teachers will constantly strive, diligently research, innovate and create to find new knowledge, new technology, new unique cultural values; solve national, regional and world tasks; participate in contributing to sustainable economic development, promote social progress, enrich the treasure of human knowledge and Vietnamese culture.

The leaders of VNU-HCM expressed their hope that students will study hard, cultivate themselves, and practice to have comprehensive knowledge, social responsibility, leadership capacity, and entrepreneurial thinking; master and creatively apply knowledge, and soon bring our country into a new era of development.
