The key to exploiting the power of Vietnamese talent

Instead of pursuing uncertain foreign talents that are subject to fierce competition, we should focus on research and development (R&D) and effectively exploit "front-end talents" - existing and potential resources right in the country.

In the context of globalization, human resources are valuable resources that every country desires to possess. Especially, with the development of science and technology, human resources are not only a decisive factor in national competitiveness but also a foundation for solving major global problems.

Challenges of attracting talent

For Vietnam, attracting international talent is a big challenge when facing fierce competition from developed countries with attractive remuneration policies and ideal working environments.

Therefore, instead of focusing only on hunting for talent from afar, prioritizing the development of domestic talent through training and management is a more sustainable strategy, especially in the context that scientific and technological products often have interdisciplinary elements, requiring cooperation from many fields.

The biggest challenge for Vietnam in attracting international talent lies in fierce competition from wealthy countries such as the US, Singapore and China. These countries not only possess modern facilities, but also have superior remuneration policies and friendly working environments with close cooperation between research institutions, businesses and governments. They can provide high salaries, ideal research conditions, and even long-term settlement opportunities for high-quality talent.

Faced with these advantages, attracting talent based solely on compensation policies is almost a challenge for Vietnam. A more sustainable solution is to develop domestic talent, because Vietnam does not lack talented experts, scientists and engineers.

Need wise strategy

To effectively promote domestic talent resources, a wise training and management strategy is needed. This is especially important when scientific and technological products are increasingly interdisciplinary, requiring coordination between experts from many different fields.

An individual with a narrow expertise can achieve individual success, but to make great strides, it is necessary to mobilize the strength of a multidisciplinary team. Therefore, talent management is not only about discovering and nurturing talent but also about building a mechanism for them to cooperate closely and effectively.

Israel’s experience is a valuable lesson that Vietnam can learn. Despite being a small country, Israel has become a world-leading center for technology and innovation thanks to its smart management and talent development policies.

Israel does not have the financial and material resources of the major powers, but it has made full use of its internal resources. The Israeli government focuses on building a highly practical education system, encouraging creative and interdisciplinary thinking from a very early age.

They invest heavily in research centers, build startup incubators, and more importantly, create a working environment that closely connects scientists, businesses, and the government. Israel's culture of accepting failure and constant innovation helps its talented people maximize their abilities.

An important aspect of Israel's approach is its focus on multidisciplinary collaboration. They organize research and development projects in teams, where experts from different fields work together to solve complex problems.

This not only creates innovative products but also builds a network of talented people, enhancing the sustainability of the national science and technology system. If Vietnam can apply this model, it will not only help to better exploit current resources but also create momentum for innovation and cooperation.

In Vietnam, the culture of cooperation and the working environment need to be improved to create favorable conditions for talent to develop. Currently, some domestic talents are still unable to work effectively together due to fear, sometimes jealousy of sharing ideas or lack of trust in colleagues.

To change this, we need to create an open working environment where all ideas are heard and encouraged. At the same time, we need policies that encourage multidisciplinary collaboration, such as interdisciplinary research funding programs or large national projects that bring together experts from many different fields.

Mobilizing and managing multidisciplinary talents will create strong synergies, similar to vectors in the same direction, promoting sustainable and effective development. This is not only the most effective way to build a solid science and technology foundation but also an important strategy for Vietnam to enhance its position in the era of innovation and creativity.

Investment in education and training

Focusing on training and developing domestic talent is not only an alternative but also a wise and sustainable strategy. Investing in education and training, from primary to university and postgraduate levels, is an urgent requirement to build a high-quality workforce.

The education system needs to focus on developing critical thinking, communication skills, teamwork, and especially the ability to coordinate interdisciplinary fields. At the same time, increasing investment in research centers, improving remuneration and recognizing outstanding contributions will help motivate talented people to develop their abilities.
