Democrats get fundraising boost after Biden withdraws

Người Đưa TinNgười Đưa Tin22/07/2024

Following President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the race for the White House, Democratic voters donated more than $50 million online in just one day, the New York Times reported late on July 21 (US time).

Accordingly, July 21 became the most successful day when it comes to online contributions for the Democratic Party since the 2020 election.

The huge sum is based on a New York Times analysis of online donation codes maintained by ActBlue, the leading website that handles Democratic Party donations.

As Mr. Biden abandons his re-election bid and Vice President Kamala Harris looks set to win the nomination, Democratic voters have gone online to donate at a startling pace.

The US newspaper's analysis shows that donations skyrocketed from an average of less than $200,000 per hour in the hours before Mr. Biden announced his withdrawal, to nearly $11.5 million in just one hour later on July 21.

As of 10 p.m. on July 21 (US time), this was the third-largest online fundraising day in ActBlue's history. The online fundraising platform ActBlue counts all donations made on the platform, not just those to Mr. Biden or Ms. Harris.

The money includes contributions made to nearly every Democratic Senate and House candidate as well as to a range of politically oriented nonprofits.

“This could be the biggest fundraising moment in Democratic history,” Kenneth Pennington, a Democratic digital strategist, said on Twitter.

The previous largest day of giving on ActBlue came the day after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died in September 2020. ActBlue processed about $73.5 million in donations at that time.

The "brilliant" fundraising results are significant as Democrats seek to recover from a month of political infighting and stalled momentum in their race against Republican Donald Trump.

Democratic fundraising slowed significantly in the weeks following Mr Biden's "terrible" debate performance in late June.

In another development, CNN reported that the Biden-Harris Campaign on the morning of July 22 officially amended its filing with the Federal Election Commission to change the campaign name and declare Ms. Harris as their candidate for US President.

This move shows that if Ms. Harris receives the official nomination, the female Vice President can take control of the Biden-Harris Campaign account, which had nearly $96 million as of the end of June this year.
