Ensuring comprehensive, inclusive and sustainable development of Dien Bien tourism

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said that the workshop was an opportunity to share and discuss new trends in tourism development, opportunities and challenges for sustainable tourism development in Dien Bien, and at the same time marked an important step forward in implementing the Central Government's policy on developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector, the Government's direction on rapid and sustainable tourism development. This is also an important event to open the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 and celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory, 115th anniversary of Dien Bien province's establishment.

According to the Minister, the Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954 was a brilliant milestone in the history of the Vietnamese nation, marking the glorious victory of our army and people against the French colonialists. This victory has recorded in world history a golden page about the indomitable will, solidarity and ardent patriotism of the Vietnamese people.

Today, Dien Bien is not only famous for its historic victory but also an attractive tourist destination with majestic natural beauty and unique cultural identity. In recent years, Dien Bien tourism has developed.

The number of tourists coming to Dien Bien is increasing, from 480 thousand visitors in 2016 to the first time reaching the milestone of welcoming 1 million visitors in 2023. Tourism revenue is also growing steadily, reaching 1,700 billion VND in 2023. However, Dien Bien's tourism potential has not been exploited effectively and commensurate with its value.

In order to implement Resolution No. 82/NQ-CP dated May 18, 2023 of the Government on key tasks and solutions to accelerate recovery and accelerate effective and sustainable tourism development and Directive 08/CT-TTg dated February 23, 2024 of the Prime Minister on comprehensive, rapid and sustainable tourism development in the coming time, the Minister proposed that the workshop focus on discussing a number of issues such as: Assessing the current status of tourism development in Dien Bien province, analyzing the current status of tourism infrastructure, service quality, tourism products, cooperation and linkage in tourism development, as well as accessibility and experience of tourists.

At the same time, it is necessary to consider the challenges and barriers that are hindering the development of Dien Bien tourism, thereby finding solutions to overcome them. The orientation of tourism development in Dien Bien province is closely linked to the goal of sustainable development; focusing on creating unique tourism products based on Dien Bien's competitive, unique and different advantages; applying technology and digital transformation in tourism activities; developing infrastructure and improving the quality of tourism services.

At the same time, it is necessary to exchange initiatives and solutions for developing Dien Bien tourism, with the participation of all stakeholders, from management level to local community, to ensure comprehensive, inclusive and sustainable development of Dien Bien tourism.

Speaking at the workshop, Secretary of Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee Tran Quoc Cuong informed: "Dien Bien has many potentials and advantages, with the special national historical relic Dien Bien Phu Battlefield, rich multi-ethnic culture, majestic scenery... In 2023, the province surpassed the 1 million tourist arrivals mark for the first time, an increase of nearly 25% over the same period last year.

However, according to Mr. Tran Quoc Cuong, the results achieved are still very modest; the scale of tourism activities is still small. Dien Bien is looking forward to and hoping to hear the opinions, advice, suggestions, and recommendations of managers, experts, scientists, etc. and especially the opinions, recommendations, and proposals of the Vietnam Tourism Association and the community of businesses and investors in the tourism sector. Thereby, Dien Bien will have more information and new ways of doing tourism, contributing to developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector of the province."

With the aim of listening to suggestions and comments to exploit and develop tourism, the Workshop attracted many discussions and exchanges with more than 80 quality presentations from managers, scientists and experts at the central and local levels.

It clarifies, deeply analyzes, closely and accurately assesses the current status of tourism development in Dien Bien; influencing factors, opportunities and challenges; proposes directions, tasks and solutions such as promoting the exploitation of cultural and historical heritage values, building a cultural environment in traditional festivals, developing tourism products associated with natural values...

The national scientific conference "Dien Bien promotes its potential and advantages for sustainable tourism development" plays an important role in the series of events of the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024. It is a highly specialized conference and provides orientation for tourism development for Dien Bien province in the coming period.

Expecting tourism to have rapid steps on the basis of honoring heritage - preserving culture - green and sustainable development

Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said that in 2024, Vietnam aims to welcome 18 million international visitors, serve 110 million domestic visitors, and strive to achieve total revenue from tourists of VND850,000 billion, fully recovering to pre-Covid-19 levels.

To successfully implement the goals and tasks of tourism development assigned by the Party and the State, at today's Workshop, the People's Committee of Dien Bien province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the National Political Publishing House need to discuss and clarify issues, advantages and advantages that need to be promoted and existing aspects and limitations that need to be overcome in Dien Bien tourism in particular, to spread tourism in the Northwest region in general and contribute to efforts to develop sustainable tourism in Vietnam.

"Developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector is an important strategic orientation for national development, creating a driving force to promote the development of other sectors and fields. Tourism development is the responsibility of the entire political system, all levels, sectors and the whole society.

"There needs to be close leadership and direction from Party committees at all levels; strongly promoting the driving force role of businesses and communities, unified management by the State; focusing national resources on tourism development. The Government expects Dien Bien tourism in particular and Vietnam tourism in general to have rapid steps on the basis of honoring heritage - preserving culture - green and sustainable development," the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Trong Lam - Director, Editor-in-Chief of the National Political Publishing House, said that Dien Bien needs to focus on raising awareness of all levels, sectors, businesses and communities about the role and importance of tourism activities for economic, cultural, social, foreign affairs, defense, security development, etc. Exploiting the province's strengths, paying special attention to community tourism, and practical experiences in cultural villages of ethnic minorities.

Strengthening the promotion and advertisement of tourism potential and products through digital platforms. Strengthening the role of the Provincial Tourism Development Steering Committee; effectively applying State mechanisms and policies on supporting tourism development, issuing specific policies for tourism, and maximizing social resources for investment in tourism development.
