From 2025, there will be 36 subject combinations for high school graduation exams according to the new general education program (GDPT 2018). Along with that, there will be up to 81 combinations for university entrance exams.
Specifically, in 2025, there will be 11 high school graduation exam subjects including: Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Information Technology, Technology, Economic and Legal Education. Of which, candidates must take 2 compulsory subjects of Math, Literature and choose 2 subjects from the remaining 9 subjects. With this regulation, there are 36 ways to choose a combination of subjects for the high school graduation exam.
In reality in Hanoi, schools only have about 7-8 optional combinations for students from grade 10 to grade 12. Students who choose Physics, Chemistry, Biology often do not choose Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Technology. According to the survey, Technology is almost not chosen by candidates... Informatics is also chosen very little. Therefore, combinations such as Math - Literature - Physics - Technology or Math - Literature - Chemistry - Geography; Math - Literature - History - Technology; Math - Literature - Geography - Technology... will be less likely to occur.
Due to the regulation of high school graduation exams with 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects, the university and college admission combinations in 2025 will change significantly with the appearance of many new combinations. In theory, there will be a total of 81 university and college admission combinations in 2025. However, some schools are narrowing the admission combinations instead of expanding them. This is to limit the complexity of handling the difference in scores between the combinations. Up to this point, some universities have announced new admission combinations for the 2025 admission season. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade has the combination of Mathematics - Information Technology - English, used to admit students to the majors of Information Technology, Information Security and Data Science. Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Law, Vietnam National University has the combination of Mathematics - English - Information Technology and Mathematics - English - Economic and Legal Education.
The National Economics University plans to use only 4 combinations instead of 9 combinations as in 2024, including A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), A01 (Math, Physics, English), D01 (Math, Literature, English) and D07 (Math, Chemistry, English). The admission combinations have no difference in scores, no additional criteria and all subjects are calculated with a coefficient of 1.
Commenting on the high school graduation exam combinations from 2025, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges said that the 4-subject exam from 2025 has a new special feature with at least 36 ways to choose the exam subjects, instead of 4 combinations as before. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to have regulations to avoid the case of schools "blossoming", unifying reasonable admission combinations, and resolutely eliminating "strange" combinations. In addition, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to unify regulations on choosing high school graduation exam results as the main criterion for admission to university and vocational education as directed in Resolution 29: "Innovating the method of examination and recognition of high school graduation in the direction of reducing pressure and costs for society while still ensuring reliability, honesty, and correct assessment of students' abilities, as a basis for admission to vocational education and university education...
In recent years, university admissions have shown that high school graduation exam results are the method with the highest admission rate. The Ministry of Education and Training has asked universities to increase the quota for the graduation exam score method. In addition, candidates have more opportunities to apply for university admissions using other methods such as using academic records, foreign language certificates, and ability/thinking assessment test scores...
On December 24, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training officially issued Circular No. 24/2024 on the Regulations on High School Graduation Exams. Accordingly, the 2025 High School Graduation Exam has the following notable new points: The exam is organized into 3 sessions, including: 1 session for Literature, 1 session for Math and 1 session for organizing optional exams. Candidates will be arranged according to the optional exam combination to optimize the exam room and exam score; Using a combination of process assessment scores (academic transcripts) and exam results in considering graduation recognition at a ratio of 50-50. The average score of academic transcripts of the years is calculated by weight; Foreign language certificates will continue to be used for exam exemption in considering graduation recognition but will not be converted to 10 points in considering graduation recognition as before; the graduation score calculation formula does not include foreign language scores in this case.
