HANU - This morning, October 14, 2024, Hanoi University (HANU) coordinated with the Italian Embassy in Vietnam to organize the opening ceremony of the Italian Language Week.
Attending the event were Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to Vietnam Marco della Seta; Mr. Mattia Farris, First Secretary, Head of Political, Cultural and Press Department, Embassy of Italy in Vietnam. Representing Hanoi University were Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice President, Head of the Italian Language Department - Dr. Pham Bich Ngoc; Representatives of partners, sponsors and a large number of teachers and students of the Italian Language Department.
First launched in 2001 by the initiative of the President of the Crusca Linguistics Institute Francesco Sabatini, the World Week of Italian Language has always been a very special occasion to promote and introduce the culture of the beautiful boot-shaped country to friends around the world. This is an annual event, the result of effective cooperation between Hanoi University and the Italian Embassy in Vietnam and a bridge to connect people who love the culture of the poetic country of Italy. This year's event takes the theme "Italian: Discover the world through the pages of books".
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ambassador Marco della Seta said: “2024 is a pivotal year for promoting the Italian publishing sector globally. The theme of the year is inspired by the fact that each book is a journey through time and space - a theme that runs through Italian literature, typically through the classic work “Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri. This will be an opportunity for readers and interested people to come into contact with new cultures, explore the world and experience different things through impressive characters, perceive the world through their own lens to escape personal stereotypes and prejudices.”
The Ambassador expressed his special thanks to the valuable cooperation of Hanoi University, the Italian Language Department and all the students who have contributed to collaborating with the Italian Embassy to promote the Italian language and convey the profound values of this country to the public in Vietnam in particular and around the world. Ambassador Marco della Seta affirmed that he will continue to expand study abroad opportunities for Vietnamese students - young people who love Italy to come to this country to experience and study.
On behalf of the University, Vice President Nguyen Tien Dung expressed the honor of HANU in cooperating with the Embassy of Italy in Vietnam to organize cultural exchange activities and events, contributing to strengthening and promoting the friendly and cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Italy. With the spirit of this year's event to honor the reading culture in the Italian style: Reading - Going beyond the acquisition of knowledge, stimulating critical thinking and curiosity, creating the basis for the comprehensive development of each individual, this is also completely consistent with the core values that HANU promotes and nurtures for its students including: Dynamic, creative, responsible, critical thinking and adaptability.
In her speech at the ceremony as the head of the Italian Department, Dr. Pham Bich Ngoc said: In more than 20 years of construction and development, with nearly 1,000 bachelors and more than 500 students studying, the Italian Department of Hanoi University has always been proud to be the leading unit training regular bachelors in Italian Language in Vietnam and also the only unit training bachelors in Italian Language in two directions: Translation and Interpretation and Tourism. Aware of the pioneering role in promoting Italian language and culture in Vietnam, in addition to participating in organizing cultural exchange activities, publishing textbooks and books for training, teachers and students of the Italian Department have regularly published quality translated publications every year to introduce the unique features of the country and people of Italy to the public who love books and Italian culture and language in Vietnam. The number of translated publications of the Faculty has now reached more than 30 and many of them have been sponsored for publication by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Responding to this year's theme, promoting its traditional strengths, the Italian Department has cooperated with the Times Science and Education Publishing Company (TIMES) to publish the Italian Culture Book Series, within the framework of the "Five Continents Bookcase" Project between Hanoi University and TIMES Company (initiated in January this year). Mr. Vu Trong Dai, Director of the Times Science and Education Publishing Company, the main partner of the Italian Department, emphasized in his speech: Among the translation partners that the Company has had the opportunity to cooperate with, the teachers and students of the Italian Department, HANU, have always been a great source of inspiration. Thanks to their deep understanding of the Italian people, culture and language, the teachers and students of the department have helped us select and translate the most representative works and introduce them to a wide audience in Vietnam.
The 24th World Italian Language Week event series will be held from October 14 to 20, 2024. In addition to annual competitions such as Il Girolamo (Competition for Good Translators), Il Cicerone (Competition for Good Tour Guides) and the return of the Cultural and Culinary Fair - an ideal meeting place for the public who are passionate about traditional Italian cuisine, the event also has exciting and diverse activities such as: Seminar introducing the book series jointly organized by the Italian Language Department and the Times Science and Education Publishing Company (TIMES) including 4 books "Italian Cultural Book", "A Brief History of Italian Fashion", "The Bitter Taste of Italian Cuisine" and "Italian Sign Language" taking place on Wednesday morning (October 16). Finally, the Symphony Concert took place on Friday evening (October 18) in collaboration between Hanoi University and the Sun Symphony Orchestra to exchange knowledge, inspire and spread passion for classical music to the young generation, through typical works of classical music of the world in general and of Italy in particular.
