Former Director Do Thi Nhan said 'had to pay a very high price, almost lost everything'

On the morning of November 7, the appeal court of the trial of defendant Truong My Lan (Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Van Thinh Phat Group) and 47 accomplices in the Van Thinh Phat case, phase 1, continued working with the group of defendants in the inspection team of the State Bank.

Before the appellate panel, defendant Do Thi Nhan (former Director of the Banking Inspection and Supervision Department II under the State Bank, Head of the SCB inspection team) presented new mitigating circumstances for the panel to consider reducing criminal liability.

Defendant Nhan said that after the first instance trial, he returned the entire amount of 5.2 million USD he received from defendant Vo Tan Hoang Van (former General Director of SCB Bank). At the same time, he paid a fine of 100 million VND according to the first instance verdict and mobilized his family to pay an additional 500 million VND to help remedy the consequences of the case.

The former Director of the Banking Inspection and Supervision Department II also mentioned a series of achievements during his work and contributions to the community such as: being awarded a medal by the President, a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister, and many certificates of merit and commemorative medals for his career in banking and inspection; his family has contributed to the revolution, donated land to build bridges and roads, build schools, and raise children of martyrs, etc.

In addition, Ms. Nhan said that she is suffering from many illnesses that require daily medical care, so she hopes that the panel of judges will consider reducing her sentence and allowing her to enjoy the full and maximum leniency of the law so that she can soon return to her family to recuperate. Defendant Nhan said that the price she paid for her crimes was too high, she almost lost everything.

According to the first instance verdict, during the inspection of SCB, defendant Nhan met Truong My Lan twice to discuss the inspection results. Through Vo Tan Hoang Van (former General Director of SCB Bank), defendant Do Thi Nhan repeatedly received bribes totaling 5.2 million USD to conceal and dishonestly report on the current situation and violations of SCB, and not put this bank under special control.

The actions of defendant Nhan and other defendants in the inspection team indirectly created conditions for defendant Truong My Lan and her accomplices to withdraw and use SCB's money illegally, causing especially great damage to this bank.

The first instance verdict of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court sentenced defendant Do Thi Nhan to life in prison for the crime of "Accepting bribes", with an additional fine of VND 100 million and confiscation of USD 5.2 million to the state budget.
