(HQ Online) - On March 1, 2024, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department Do Thanh Quang chaired a meeting and worked with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property rights (IPR) infringement.

The delegation was represented by Ms. Ogawa Eri, representative of the Japanese Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City and Mr. Naito Yasuaki, JPO Intellectual Property Attaché in Southeast Asia, Director of Intellectual Property Department - JETRO Bangkok.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed many issues related to the enforcement of intellectual property rights in Vietnam. Deputy Director Do Thanh Quang and leaders of the Customs Control, Anti-smuggling and Violation Handling Team introduced to the JETRO delegation about legal policies and regulations, system improvement programs, capacity building programs, difficulties and obstacles in the process of implementing the work of preventing counterfeit goods and intellectual property violations; and some cases discovered by the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department in the past time.
The representative of JETRO also pointed out the fraudulent tricks and violations related to intellectual property rights, signs of counterfeit goods, and intellectual property rights violations against products of Japanese enterprises in the Vietnamese market today; at the same time, he requested the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department to support solutions to detect and prevent these violations in order to protect the legitimate rights of Japanese enterprises and Japanese goods in the Ho Chi Minh City market in particular and the Vietnamese market in general.

Agreeing with the JETRO representative, Deputy Director Do Thanh Quang said that Vietnamese people are very fond of and trust Japanese goods because of their good quality, smart features, ease of use and safety for health. The Deputy Director also suggested many solutions for the units of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department to coordinate with JETRO in the coming time to limit trade fraud, as well as violations of intellectual property rights, promote the prevention and combat of counterfeit goods and goods violating intellectual property rights at border gates as well as in Ho Chi Minh City.
Deputy Director Do Thanh Quang also emphasized that in recent times, Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department has always paid attention to the fight against smuggling, trade fraud as well as the fight against counterfeit goods and intellectual property rights violations in the area under the management of the Department. Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department will proactively coordinate with JETRO as well as Japanese enterprises to make efforts to prevent violations, ensuring a healthy competitive environment for enterprises with import-export activities in general and Japanese enterprises in particular in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, the leaders of the two sides agreed on the contents of coordination in the coming time to promote the exchange, cooperation, and learning of experiences in goods management with the most effective measures to ensure that intellectual property rights are not violated; at the same time, helping specialized units of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department and the entire Customs sector to further improve their specialized skills in detecting counterfeit goods and goods violating intellectual property rights in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and throughout Vietnam in general.

JETRO representative thanked the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department and Deputy Director Do Thanh Quang for their warm welcome and useful information. In the coming time, JETRO hopes to continue to receive cooperation, support and assistance from Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department in the work of preventing and combating counterfeit goods and goods infringing intellectual property rights in Vietnam in order to promote the trade cooperation between the two countries to develop more comprehensively.
