Da Nang: While considering dropping out of school due to financial difficulties, the daughter of veteran Duong Van Dung (deceased) was awarded a full scholarship worth 120 million VND by the school.

On the afternoon of March 13, Duy Tan University came to her house and awarded a scholarship to Duong Thi My Linh, a first-year student majoring in Tourism and Aviation Services Management. Accordingly, the school waived all tuition fees for Linh for the remaining three years, equivalent to 120 million VND.

My Linh is the youngest child of Gac Ma veteran Duong Van Dung. During the Gac Ma naval battle (Truong Sa archipelago) on March 14, 1988, Mr. Dung was the only one of 10 Da Nang naval soldiers to survive and return home.

Mr. Dung then worked as a construction worker to earn money to send his three children to school. In 2011, his eldest son died in a traffic accident while he was in high school. In 2017, Mr. Dung died of cancer at the age of 51.

The burden of raising two daughters falls heavily on the shoulders of wife Tran Thi Loi. Every day, Mrs. Loi sells goods at Hoa Cuong wholesale market (Hai Chau district).

"I have to borrow more money to pay for my children's education," she said.

Three years ago, My Linh was admitted to the Accounting and Auditing major at Duy Tan University. After finishing her second year with over 52 million VND in tuition, she decided to transfer to the Faculty of International Tourism and Travel with the dream of working at the airport.

Mrs. Loi loves her daughter so much that she borrowed money from relatives to raise 40 million VND to pay for tuition for this school year. Linh's older sister is married and has young children so she cannot support her daughter much.

"I considered letting Linh drop out of school," she said.

Two days ago, upon hearing the news, Hero of Labor, Meritorious Teacher Le Cong Co, Chairman of the School Board, decided to exempt Linh from all tuition fees.

"The decision to award Linh a full scholarship is an act of gratitude to Gac Ma veterans," said Dr. Nguyen Huu Phu, Vice Principal of the school.

Mrs. Loi said that all last night, mother and daughter were "happy and excited". When Linh passed the university entrance exam, she thought she would not get a scholarship, so she just tried to work hard and save money to take care of her child.

"Now I feel relieved because I don't have to shoulder the burden of paying for my child's tuition anymore. I also encourage him to try hard to study and do well so that he can have a job and a better future after graduation," she added.

My Linh confided that she had thought about working part-time to earn money to go to school, but her mother did not allow it because she was afraid it would affect her studies. When her mother said that her family was in too much trouble and she might have to drop out of school, "I was very sad."

Receiving a full scholarship, Linh confided that she went through emotions from surprise to joy because her mother would have less trouble. "I will try my best to study and develop myself so as not to let everyone down, and after graduating, I will go to work to help my mother," Linh said.

My Linh said jokingly and "gently" because Tourism and Aviation Services Management is the major she likes. At the end of this year, My Linh will be participating in a training trip in Korea.

At dawn on March 14, 1988, when the army was moving materials to Gac Ma, China sent many warships and soldiers to attack, causing 64 Vietnamese soldiers to die and 9 to be captured, including veteran Duong Van Dung. Ships HQ-604 and HQ-605 were sunk. Ship HQ 505, which was set on fire, rushed to the shoal at full speed, becoming a living landmark protecting the sovereignty of Co Lin. Vietnam kept Co Lin and Len Dao. Gac Ma has been illegally occupied by China to this day.
