Latest storm news: First storm in 2024 unlikely to enter the East Sea

Earlier, on the afternoon of May 23, informing the press about the latest storm news, Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Nguyen Van Huong said that there is currently a tropical depression in the Northwest Pacific region (east of the southern Philippines).

If it strengthens into a storm, it will be the first storm in the Northwest Pacific in 2024.

The latest storm forecast shows that after strengthening into a storm in the Northwest Pacific, the storm will move mainly northwest along the eastern part of the Philippines, then possibly move northeast and then back out to the Northwest Pacific.

Currently, forecasts from the International Typhoon Forecast Centers show that the storm will go to the deepest west (entering the meridian at about 123 degrees East longitude) and then change direction to go out.

Mr. Nguyen Van Huong assessed that the impact of the storm causing strong winds and heavy rains on the eastern part of the East Sea is also very low.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting is closely monitoring the development of this tropical depression that is likely to strengthen into a storm.

The above phenomenon shows signs that the hurricane season in the Northwest Pacific region has begun.

According to statistics, in May every year, there are about 1.3 storms/tropical depressions appearing in the Northwest Pacific region. Thus, almost every year, storms and tropical depressions appear in the Northwest Pacific.

Giving an assessment of the trend of hydrometeorological disasters until the end of 2024, Mr. Hoang Duc Cuong predicted that there would be about 11-13 storms in the East Sea and 5-7 storms affecting our mainland. Storm and tropical depression activities are likely to concentrate in the second half of the storm season (from September to November 2024).

"Climate change continues to increase extremes (including both lows and highs), so in 2024, it is forecasted that there will be complex hydrometeorological disasters including heat waves, drought, salinity, thunderstorms, hailstorms above normal levels in the first half of the year and more rain, storms, floods, and inundations, concentrated in the second half of the year. This is an impact scenario quite similar to the ENSO pattern in 2020," said Mr. Hoang Duc Cuong.
