Co Noi farmers are enthusiastic about production.
Previously, when mentioning Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La), people only thought of a land of corn and cassava cultivation, where people worried about every meal and their children were not enough. Now, when returning to this land, the first thing we saw was a vibrant countryside. Co Noi has really changed, far from what we knew about a difficult commune like before. Not only is it bustling and bustling in the central area, but along the village and hamlet roads, many spacious houses have sprung up, interspersed with endless sugarcane fields and fruit orchards.
Coming to Co Noi this time, we met Mr. Lo Van Chien. Mr. Chien is the former Party Secretary of Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La). He is probably the person who understands the changes of Co Noi today the most.
Mr. Chien recalled that 20 years ago, Co Noi commune was extremely difficult, a wild and poor land. People in the area mainly depended on short-term crops such as corn and cassava for their income. The farming method was backward and the land was infertile. At that time, trade in goods was almost undeveloped. The poverty rate in the area was still high.
"People here at that time were very poor, struggling to find food and clothing every day. The agricultural products they produced were not much, and even if they did produce them, it was difficult to sell them. The mindset of the people at that time was just to make enough to eat," said Mr. Chien.

By 1996, at that time, the commune had a sugarcane factory operating stably, opening a new path for farmers to promote agricultural development. With the government's mobilization to change the crop structure, along with support in terms of seeds, fertilizers, and land preparation from Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, households in Co Noi, Nhap, Lech, Hua Tat villages, etc. converted ineffective cultivated land to grow sugarcane, serving the raw material area for the factory. Only 3 years later, from 1 or 2 villages growing sugarcane, it spread to all villages, Co Noi commune became the raw sugarcane area of the sugarcane company, with hundreds of hectares.
"Thanks to sugarcane, the lives of Co Noi people have changed a lot, their living standards are getting better and better. Small families have more than 1 hectare, large families have several hectares of sugarcane. People earn hundreds of hectares of money each year, every family has food and savings, and their children can go to school," said Mr. Chien.

Not only the sugarcane area of Son La, Co Noi is now also known as a large fruit growing area of Mai Son district, with new varieties of crops, bringing high economic efficiency. Along the internal road, we came to the strawberry growing area of Co Noi commune, on all the hillsides, everywhere we saw people busy preparing for a strawberry crop. In recent years, thanks to the introduction of new crop varieties, people here have had high incomes, small households earn several hundred million, large households earn billions of dong each year thanks to growing strawberries.
Right next to the concreted rural road, going deep into the field, we met Mr. Lo Van Tuan, Co Noi village, Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La) who was taking care of his family's newly planted strawberry garden with his wife. In the past 2 years, thanks to growing strawberries, his family has had an income of hundreds of millions of dong each year, having enough to eat and save, and having money to send their children to school.
Mr. Tuan shared: In previous years, his family's life was still difficult, depending on corn and cassava, the income was not good. Implementing the policy of the province and district on converting ineffective crop structure to new crop varieties for higher economic efficiency. His family converted the entire area of ineffective corn land to strawberry cultivation. With the selling price ranging from 150,000 - 200,000 VND/kg, in the harvest season, his family's daily income is not less than 1 million VND.

Building the homeland of Co Noi more and more prosperous and beautiful
Not only promoting economic development, the people of Co Noi commune also wholeheartedly contribute to building new rural areas. Mr. Nguyen Anh Thu, Chairman of Co Noi Commune People's Committee informed: Since 2012, when starting to build new rural areas, the conditions of the commune were extremely difficult. The whole commune is mainly ethnic minorities, the intellectual level as well as the material life of the people are still limited. The poverty rate is high, so when implementing the construction of new rural areas, we encountered many difficulties.
However, after more than 10 years of building new rural areas, the rural appearance of the commune has changed a lot. The whole commune has 3 ethnic groups living together: Kinh, Mong, Thai. The commune has more than 4,800 households, more than 20,000 people. All households have access to safe electricity and water, reaching 100%. The inter-village and inter-commune traffic routes are concreted to ensure convenient travel for people. Kindergartens, junior high schools, primary schools, and high schools are built spaciously to meet the teaching and learning needs of students.

In addition to investing in infrastructure, leaders from the district to the grassroots level are interested in transforming the agricultural structure to increase the income value for the people. Fruit tree planting models are being developed, such as: custard apple, Taiwanese mango, dragon fruit, orange, grapefruit and other high-value livestock models. The material life of the people is constantly improving significantly.
Since reaching the new rural finish line, the commune has always implemented propaganda measures to mobilize people to preserve and promote the achievements the commune has achieved. The new rural construction program is a major policy of the Party and State to develop agricultural production in depth, forming a number of concentrated specialized production areas.

Co Noi is no longer in trouble, sugarcane and fruit gardens stretch far and wide, proving the development of this land. The average income per capita increases every year. The local economic structure has shifted in the right direction, from an economy that mainly relied on rice, cassava and corn production, the commune now focuses on developing perennial and industrial crops.
The fields of culture, education and health continue to be maintained and developed. The lives of the people here have changed a lot, especially the poverty rate of the whole commune has decreased.
