Ngoc Chien (Muong La, Son La) currently has nearly 600 hectares of rice fields, mainly concentrated in the fields of Ban Luot, Muong Chien, and Na Tau. Of which, 2/3 of the area is intensively cultivated with the specialty sticky rice variety with an output of about 700 tons/year.
Mr. Lo Van Thoa, Chairman of Ngoc Chien Commune People's Committee, said that Ngoc Chien is known as a land with a famous specialty of sticky rice. This is a very delicious and sticky specialty that you will never forget after eating it once. In 2020, Ngoc Chien sticky rice was recognized as a 4-star OCOP product at the provincial level.
Because of the climate and soil characteristics, sticky rice here has a more distinctive flavor than regular sticky rice varieties.
The golden ripe rice fields are harvested by the people, used to make sticky rice for daily family meals or to make green rice flakes. A portion of the rice will be sold by the people to raise money to invest in the next year's rice crop.

The rice harvest time is also the time for the New Rice Festival of the people of Ngoc Chien commune. The festival is an agricultural worshiping belief, imbued with the unique identity and culture of the White Thai people, aiming to honor, preserve and promote the traditional cultural values of the rice-growing residents for many generations.
The new rice celebration with the new rice offering ritual is held at the Muong Chien village church and the Na Tau village church. Early in the morning of the chosen day, the shaman offers offerings including boiled pig, chicken, sticky rice, green rice, wine, etc. and performs rituals to express gratitude to ancestors, heaven and earth, praying for favorable weather, good wind, and bountiful crops.
After the ceremony at the church, households prepare the new rice offering at home. Women make green rice and cook rice from the new harvest; men prepare dishes from pigs, chickens, fish, beef, goats, wild bees, rat meat, pumpkins, etc. The ancestral offering tray is placed by the head of the family in the middle of the house, near the ancestral altar. At the end of the offering, the host and guests enjoy together with jars of rice wine and cups of sticky rice wine.
Ms. Leo Thi Tinh, Muong Chien village, Ngoc Chien commune shared: This year, my family had a good rice harvest. This amount of rice will help my family have food until next year's rice crop. In order to harvest on time, my family asked relatives to help harvest and organize new meals.
