At the age of 61, teacher Noh Jong Soon is still full of energy. She has also decided to extend her working time in Nghe An because she loves this land and considers it her second home.

A special teacher

This time last year, teacher Noh Jong Soon – a volunteer from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) came to Vietnam and attended a short training course before arriving at the Vietnam – Korea Industrial Technical College to do volunteer work in the training field. After taking up the job, for the past year, she has been regularly present at the school very early to teach classes with the students.

“I think I had a really happy time. But what makes me feel happy and meaningful is when I see my efforts have brought results and the students' Korean ability has improved,” said teacher Noh Jong Soon.

Teacher Noh Jong Soon is currently a Korean language teacher at Vietnam - Korea Industrial Technical College.

In addition to teaching Korean, Ms. Noh also teaches Korean culture and attends orientation classes for Vietnamese workers planning to work in Korea. To enrich her lessons, she has spent a lot of time learning and exploring the culture, customs and practices of Nghe An as well as many other provinces and cities.

Ms. Noh's colleagues were surprised because, although she is over 60 years old, after only nearly 1 month of working in Vinh city, Ms. Noh was able to ride an electric bike to explore Quang Trung temple, Uncle Ho's hometown, museums in Vinh city and has a lot of knowledge about the places she has visited. Over the past year, she has also been to Sa Pa, Hue and many other famous landscapes in Vietnam.

Her love has been passed on to her husband and sons who are working in the television industry in Korea and all three have visited Nghe An to explore this land together. Ms. Noh also said that being away from her homeland, husband and children makes her miss home a lot. However, her family is the motivation for her to stick with this job, because every day she receives positive encouragement from her husband and children, encouraging her to try to make her dream come true.

Before coming to Vietnam, teacher Noh Jong Soon was an ordinary civil servant working at an administrative agency in Jeonbuk Province (South Korea). However, in addition to her daily work, she often participated in volunteer activities on weekends at human resource recruitment offices. This was also the opportunity for her to become a volunteer for the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and then volunteer to come to Vietnam to teach Korean.

Teacher Noh Jong Soon added that her arrival in Nghe An was completely by chance, due to an assignment from the organization. However, from the first time she set foot here, she had a lot of affection for this land.

“After working in Nghe An, I had many opportunities to go on business trips to other provinces and cities. However, after only a few days, I missed my job and Vinh city and just wanted to return, like returning to my own home,” Ms. Noh Jong Soon shared.

Bring positive energy to students

Coming to work at the Vietnam - Korea Industrial Technical College, although it is only a volunteer role, teacher Noh Jong Soon's schedule is often full every day of the week. After nearly a year working with the students here, teacher Noh Jong Soon is called by the students and colleagues by a very simple name, Ms. Noh. Although she understands very little Vietnamese, teacher Noh said that she especially enjoys being called "Miss". "It is the love of the students that gives me the motivation to stick with this job," Ms. Noh confided.

At the age of 61, teacher Noh always brings positive energy to her students.

Student Ngan Van Thiet - a second-year student of the Korean Language Department, shared many memories with this special teacher. Just over a week ago, he and his classmates visited her house and she cooked many Korean specialties for them. Occasionally, the class also went with her to explore many famous restaurants in Vinh city.

I think what I appreciate most about her is the positive energy she always transmits to her students. Personally, I used to come from a poor commune in Tuong Duong district, so I was quite shy. But studying with her and communicating with her regularly, I feel more confident and my foreign language skills have improved significantly. She also gave me a lot of advice when she knew I wanted to go to Korea to work after graduation.

Attached to her new students and colleagues, teacher Noh Jong Soon also confided that she received many things from this job. Perhaps that is why, despite being the oldest teacher in the school, she never showed signs of fatigue.

On the contrary, her scientific, meticulous and responsible attitude and way of working are even more appreciated and respected by her colleagues. "Many people also ask why I have such positive energy. There are many reasons, but the most important reason is my attitude, positive thinking and personally I want to change myself, change my job, renew myself and want to try many new fields. Working in Vietnam helps me establish many relationships with friends and is an opportunity for me to make many new friends, colleagues, students...", Ms. Noh added.

The new environment helps teacher Noh have many interesting experiences.

In addition to her work as a Korean language and culture teacher, recently teacher Noh Jong Soon, together with the International Cooperation Agency KOICA, completed the first project she directly implemented at the school, which was the inauguration of the Korean language practice room, which is considered the most modern practice room in the country, with 100% imported equipment.

The operation of this project is also the reason why she decided to volunteer to stay with the Vietnam - Korea Industrial Technical College for another year. Because she believes that, when she has devoted much effort to the project, she can help the school operate the practice room effectively and give her more opportunities to support the school's students to be able to listen, speak, read and write Korean fluently.

Love for Nghe An is the motivation for teacher Noh Jong Soon to extend her working time.

Extending her working time, teacher Noh Jong Soon is also eagerly waiting for her first celebration of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20). That is the day she will be able to wear the traditional Vietnamese ao dai given by the school, participate in cultural and artistic exchange activities, receive meaningful wishes from her students and once again understand and feel more fully the tradition of "respecting teachers" of the Vietnamese people.
