Is blood clot screening necessary?

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông12/05/2024

Ask:

After the news that AstraZeneca admitted that its Covid-19 vaccine can cause blood clots, many friends advised me to get a D-dimer test to screen for this risk. I would like to get a doctor's advice?

Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, Vietnam - Russia Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, Ministry of National Defense replied:

The rush of people to test for D-dimer index to evaluate blood function and clotting status is completely unnecessary, unscientific, time-consuming and costly.

D-dimer is produced during the process of blood clots in the human body being broken down and dissolved. However, the process of blood clot formation and dissolution is a continuous, non-stop process in the body. D-dimer is often high in people with venous occlusion, pulmonary embolism or disseminated arterial coagulation or in stroke.

If someone does experience blood clotting as a side effect of the vaccine, it will only show up within 3-4 weeks of vaccination. The risk of blood clotting and thrombocytopenia from this vaccine is very low.

If someone has been injected and is affected and forms a blood clot, the clot will be small and will gradually dissolve after 24 hours to a maximum of 4 weeks. When the clot dissolves, it will also produce D-dimer in the blood.

People have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine for a long time, this reaction would have happened at that time, so testing for blood clotting index at this time is meaningless.
