On October 11, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Dong Thap province to organize a conference "Discussing solutions for developing pangasius breeds to cope with climate change and trade barriers" to meet the demand for high-quality breeds in the Mekong Delta.

The conference was attended by leaders, departments, businesses and pangasius farmers in An Giang, Dong Thap and Can Tho city.

According to the report of the Department of Fisheries, by the end of September 2024, the output of fish fry is estimated at 23.6 billion, and fish fry is estimated at 3.41 billion. It is estimated that in the whole year of 2024, the output of harvested fish fry will reach 30 billion, and fish fry will reach 4 billion, exceeding 16% over the same period in 2023.

It is expected that by 2025, high-quality three-level pangasius seed production chains will provide enough supply for the entire Mekong Delta region.

Currently, the country has 1,920 facilities producing and raising pangasius fry, but only 2 facilities have been certified by the Department of Fisheries; 97/1,842 facilities raising pangasius fry (from fry to fingerlings) have been certified.

In 2024, the number of establishments that ceased operations was quite large, accounting for about 1/5 of the total number of establishments. No establishment had registered, implemented, and been granted a certificate of disease safety. Only 18 establishments had declared conformity as prescribed.

Mr. Phung Duc Tien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that in the coming time, it is necessary to strengthen solutions related to breeding, nutritional feed, disease prevention, biosafety and infrastructure as well as technical staff to improve the quality of pangasius breeds.

The Department of Fisheries is assigned to tighten the management of breeds, only qualified facilities will be granted certificates.

"We need to focus on the integration phase to enhance the industry's stature, striving for an output of 1.75-1.8 million tons/year and an export of over 2 billion USD," said Mr. Tien.
