President Vo Van Thuong resigns as Politburo member and Party Central Committee member, 13th tenure

The Central Committee agreed to let Mr. Vo Van Thuong cease holding the positions of Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

President Vo Van Thuong was dismissed from his position as member of the Politburo and member of the 13th Party Central Committee.

On March 20, 2024, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, the 13th Party Central Committee met to consider and give opinions on the removal from office and retirement of Mr. Vo Van Thuong, Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

The Central Committee assessed that Mr. Vo Van Thuong is a key leader of the Party and State, who received basic training and grew up from the grassroots level, and was assigned to hold many important leadership positions of the Party and State.

However, according to the recent report of the Central Inspection Committee and the authorities, he violated the Regulations on what party members are not allowed to do, the Regulations on the exemplary responsibility of cadres and party members, first of all, members of the Politburo, members of the Secretariat, members of the Central Executive Committee of the Party and is responsible as a leader according to the Party's regulations and the State's laws.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong's violations and shortcomings have caused negative public opinion, affecting the reputation of the Party, the State and himself. Fully aware of his responsibility to the Party, the State and the people, he submitted a request to resign from his assigned positions and retire from work.

Pursuant to current regulations of the Party and State and considering the wishes of Mr. Vo Van Thuong, the Party Central Committee agreed to let Mr. Vo Van Thuong cease to hold the positions of: Member of the Politburo, Member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.


Mr. Vo Van Thuong was born in 1970; hometown is An Phuoc commune, Mang Thit district, Vinh Long province; professional qualification is Master of Philosophy. He is a member of the Politburo, 12th and 13th terms; Secretary of the Party Central Committee, 12th and 13th terms; member of the Party Central Committee, 10th (alternate), 11th, 12th, 13th terms; National Assembly delegate, 12th, 14th, 15th terms.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong grew up as a Youth Union official and held many important positions from local to central levels: Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, First Secretary of the Central Youth Union, President of the Vietnam Youth Union, Chairman of the National Committee on Vietnamese Youth...

In August 2011, he was assigned by the Politburo to hold the position of Secretary of the Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee.

In April 2014, he became the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee for the 2010-2015 term and was assigned by the Politburo to run the work of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

In January 2016, he was elected to the Party Central Committee by the 12th National Congress and elected to the Politburo by the Central Committee.

In February 2016, he was assigned by the Politburo to join the Central Party Secretariat, holding the position of Head of the Central Propaganda Department.

At the 13th Party Congress, Mr. Vo Van Thuong was re-elected as a member of the Central Executive Committee and was elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong was assigned by the Politburo to hold the position of Standing Member of the Secretariat from February 2021 to early March 2023.

On March 2, 2023, at the 4th extraordinary session of the 15th National Assembly, he was elected to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam until now.
