On the evening of December 31, Can Tho City solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Can Tho City under the Central Government (January 1, 2004 - January 1, 2024). The ceremony was attended by President Vo Van Thuong.
Also attending were former President Nguyen Minh Triet; former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung; Mr. Tran Thanh Man, Politburo member, Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly; Mr. Nguyen Van Nen, Politburo member, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, along with many leaders and former leaders of the Party and State; leaders of departments, ministries, branches, and central agencies; leaders of provinces and cities in the country; and representatives of diplomatic agencies in Vietnam.

The 20th anniversary of its establishment and being directly under the Central Government is an important political event of Can Tho City, an important milestone in implementing the development orientation of Can Tho City to become the dynamic center and core graph of the Mekong Delta region.
Over 20 years of construction and development, Can Tho has achieved many important achievements in many fields. The value of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in the period 2011-2023 is estimated to increase by an average of 5.87%; in which, in 2023, the value of gross regional domestic product (current price) is estimated to reach 118,000 billion VND, 10.2 times higher than in 2004; the economic structure has shifted towards trade, services and industry as the main sectors, growth quality and competitiveness have been gradually improved.
Total retail sales of goods always rank first in the Mekong Delta region and third out of five centrally-run cities, after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
Gross domestic product per capita (GRDP/person) in 2023 will reach 94.7 million VND, 9.2 times higher than in 2004 (about 4,000 USD/person/year), contributing to improving the quality of life of the city's people. In addition, the mobilization of social resources for investment in developing Can Tho's socio-economic infrastructure has also increased significantly, with total social investment capital increasing from 4,088 billion VND in 2004 to 22,000 billion VND in 2020 and estimated at 30,913 billion VND in 2023, an average increase of 11.24%/year.
Socio-economic infrastructure; in particular, the transport infrastructure system in Can Tho is also gradually being completed, making the city an important hub for regional and international transport, gradually affirming the role and position of the central city of the Mekong Delta region.
Over the past 20 years, Can Tho City has gradually affirmed its role as a regional center in culture, healthcare, education and training, science and technology. The material and spiritual life of the people has been improved, the whole city has 36/36 communes meeting new rural standards, the poverty rate has decreased sharply, to 0.21%, the lowest level in the Mekong Delta and much lower than the national average.
