President To Lam: The elderly are always worthy of being the pillars of the nation.

On the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Vietnamese Elderly (June 6, 1941 - June 6, 2024), on the morning of June 6, at the Presidential Palace, President To Lam met and congratulated a delegation of outstanding elderly people nationwide.

Also attending were Party Central Committee members: Le Khanh Hai, Head of the Office of the President; Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Vice President and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Pham Tat Thang, Deputy Head of the Central Committee for Mass Mobilization, and 120 delegates who are key officials and representatives of the National Association of the Elderly.

Reporting to the President on the activities of the Association in recent times, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly Nguyen Thanh Binh said that with the attention and direction of the leaders of the Party, the State, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Party committees and authorities at all levels, the Association has been active, proactive, creative and timely concretizing the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, promoting propaganda, raising awareness for elderly members, unifying actions, solidarity, creativity, building a strong Association; effectively implementing the work of protecting, caring for and promoting the role of the elderly; actively participating in contributing to building and protecting the socialist Fatherland of Vietnam.

In the context of the rapid aging of the population and the fourth industrial revolution, which has created new opportunities but also posed challenges in terms of economy, society, security, national defense and the activities of the association at all levels as well as the lives of each member and the elderly, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh affirmed that the elderly remain steadfast, continue to promote the tradition of "Dien Hong", strengthen the building of the great national unity bloc, and be a solid bridge between the Party, the State and the people.

The President of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly pledged to strive to build the Association into a socio-political organization, contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress; making the elderly in our country truly "a precious asset of the nation, an important force of the country, a pillar of the family and Vietnamese society" as beloved President Ho Chi Minh once said, and at the same time worthy of the 18 golden words that the Central Executive Committee of the Party has given: "The older the age, the higher the ambition, setting a shining example for the cause of building and defending the Fatherland."

At the meeting, representatives of the elderly and key officials of the Association of the Elderly in some localities said that with the attention of the Party and the State, and the facilitation of agencies and localities, over the past many years, the activities and movements of the elderly nationwide have had strong and prosperous developments; social security policies for the elderly have been paid attention to and implemented in real life.

Delegates expressed their hope that the Party, State, ministries and relevant agencies will continue to have policies to further promote the role of the elderly through amending and supplementing legal regulations on the elderly; improving the quality of health care and creating more suitable jobs for the elderly.

Expressing his emotion at receiving the key leaders and outstanding elderly delegates on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the tradition of the elderly in Vietnam, the President respectfully sent to the delegates attending the meeting, as well as nearly 17 million elderly people across the country, his warmest congratulations and deepest gratitude; wishing them to always live happily, healthily, and happily, and continue to promote the role of the elderly in the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

The President expressed pride in the glorious contributions of the country's elderly, emphasizing that the Vietnamese elderly in every historical period have always been worthy of being the pillars of the nation, sacrificing themselves for the country, and are the immortal torch lighting up the spirit of self-reliance, self-reliance, self-strengthening, and national immortality.

Appreciating the report of the President of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, as well as the sharing of the delegates, the President affirmed the outstanding results of the Association of the Elderly in recent times, further demonstrating the "Dien Hong" tradition that has been and is being promoted in today's era.

Our country has a glorious foundation, high international position and reputation as today, we cannot fail to mention the important contributions of the Vietnamese elderly.

On behalf of the Party and State leaders, President To Lam welcomed and commended the important contributions of the elderly nationwide in recent times, worthy of President Ho Chi Minh's teachings: "The responsibility of the elderly towards the country's mission is truly great."

The Vietnamese elderly are still a solid foundation, keeping the country stable and peaceful for sustainable development and progress with the times.

For the Party, the elderly are loyal and make active contributions to the work of building an increasingly clean and strong Party and political system; for the Fatherland, the elderly preserve the historical and cultural soul, foster an indomitable spirit, and realize the aspiration for national independence associated with socialism.

The President agreed with the recommendations and proposals of the Association of the Elderly, as well as the opinions of the delegates, and requested that relevant levels, sectors, organizations and unions from the central to local levels need to listen to the proposals, thoughts and legitimate aspirations of the elderly, have mechanisms and policies to create favorable conditions for the activities of the Association and work for the elderly in accordance with the traditional morality of "remembering the source of water when drinking water", and considering the elderly as a blessing for the nation.

Businesses, philanthropists and the whole society join hands to preserve the great fortune of the country, which is like the accumulation of precious national resources.

Paying attention to the work of taking care of the health of the elderly, the President noted that the authorities need to continue to have specific activities and policies to improve the quality of health care for the elderly, so that the elderly can live happily, live healthily, and increase their longevity; encourage and guide the elderly to know how to protect and monitor their health.

On the other hand, the President requested the Central Committee of the Association to proactively organize theoretical research, summarize practices in accordance with the functions, tasks and characteristics of the Association, contribute intelligence and enthusiasm to contribute ideas to the draft documents of the 14th National Party Congress, the draft report summarizing 40 years of innovation; continue to pay attention to implementing Conclusion No. 58-KL/TW dated June 23, 2023 of the Secretariat "on the organization and operation of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly," perfect the organization of the Association from the Central to the grassroots level, ensuring systematicity, consistency, promoting the strength of great national unity, the elderly are an important political force of the country; at the same time, proactively advise the Central Committee to direct the summary of 30 years of implementing Directive No. 59-CT/TW dated September 27, 1995 of the Secretariat (term VII) "on caring for the elderly;" provide theoretical and practical basis for the Central Committee to refer to and consider issuing the Party's strategic policy on leadership and direction of work for the elderly in the new period.

Along with that, the President emphasized that amending the Law on the Elderly in Vietnam and promulgating the National Strategy on the Elderly in Vietnam for the period 2030-2050 are also urgent tasks, creating a legal basis for the activities of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly to meet new requirements, especially in the context of rapid population aging in Vietnam; thereby making practical contributions to Vietnam's commitment to ensuring the rights of the elderly, to the progress and fairness of humanity.

On this occasion, President To Lam presented gifts to outstanding elderly delegates and key officials of Elderly Associations nationwide./.
