"Taking profit" from VCI shares, the owner of Katinat and Phe La chains earned about 600 billion VND

Having invested in Vietcap Securities since the first days of VCI shares being listed on the stock exchange, Ms. Truong Nguyen Thien Kim is no longer a major shareholder of this securities company after the recent capital withdrawal.

Ms. Truong Nguyen Thien Kim, wife of Mr. To Hai - Member of the Board of Directors and General Director of Vietcap Securities Joint Stock Company (code VCI - HoSE floor) said that she has completed the sale of 13.2 million VCI shares.

The transaction was conducted from September 4 to September 11. During this period, there were continuous negotiated transactions in VCI shares with a volume of about more than 11.2 million units. Of which, nearly 11.1 million units were "changed" in the session of September 4 alone with an average transaction price of VND46,300/share. It is estimated that this investor earned about more than VND600 billion.

After the transaction was made, Ms. Kim reduced the number of VCI shares she held from nearly 22.84 million shares, equivalent to 5.17%, to nearly 9.64 million shares, equivalent to 2.18%.

Ms. Truong Nguyen Thien Kim's first investment in Vietcap Securities was recorded in July 2017, at the same time VCI shares were listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HoSE), with a purchase volume of 5 million shares. Subsequent registrations for purchase and stock splits of Vietcap Securities have significantly increased the number of shares held by this businesswoman.

Ms. Kim completed the sale of the above shares right before the date Vietcap Securities closed the shareholder list to issue shares to increase capital from equity (bonus shares). The ex-rights trading date is September 12. The right exercise rate is 30% (shareholders owning 10 shares will receive 3 new shares). With 441.9 million outstanding shares, Vietcap plans to issue nearly 132.6 million new shares; thereby increasing charter capital to nearly VND5,745 billion.

In addition to being known as the wife of VCI's General Director, Ms. Truong Nguyen Thien Kim (born in 1976) also holds many positions at other enterprises such as Independent Member of the Board of Directors of Ben Thanh Trading and Service Joint Stock Company (code BTT - HoSE); Member of the Board of Supervisors of Mien Tay Bus Station Joint Stock Company (code WCS - HNX); Member of the Board of Directors of International Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (code IDP - UPCoM). Not only that, this businesswoman is also directly holding key leadership positions at many famous F&B chains such as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phe La Joint Stock Company; Member of the Board of Directors and General Director of Katinat Café Joint Stock Company.

Since Ms. Kim announced the registration to sell this stock on August 27, VCI stock price has slid quite a bit, from 37,000 VND to 33,400 VND at the end of September 13, equivalent to "evaporating" about 9.7% in more than 2 weeks.

In the second quarter of 2024, Vietcap Securities achieved more than VND 279 billion in net profit, the highest level in the last 8 quarters and an increase of 140% over the same period. According to the explanation, the positive business results in the second quarter were due to positive market conditions in the proprietary trading segment, which realized profits from a number of investments, leading to a sharp increase in revenue from financial assets recorded through profit/loss (FVTPL).

Accumulated in the first 6 months of the year, the company's pre-tax profit was more than VND 571 billion, an increase of more than 170% over the same period and achieved more than 80% of the annual plan. Net profit was VND 477 billion, an increase of 151% compared to the first half of 2023. As of June 30, 2024, Vietcap's FVTPL portfolio had an original value of VND 1,016 billion, an increase of more than VND 184 billion compared to the end of the first quarter. Margin lending balance was VND 7,864 billion, a decrease of VND 555 billion compared to the first quarter.
