Ms. Phuong Thao, the literature teacher of student Nhu Nguyen at Ernst Thälman High School, told my acquaintance: "Nhu Nguyen is an excellent student, knows how to overcome difficulties, is very diligent, hard-working, good at history and geography, has participated in the city-level excellent student competition team. Enthusiastic about the movement, ready to help friends. Has self-respect".
Teacher Phuong Thao said: "I was not surprised when Nhu Nguyen chose to study Spanish. As a girl with a strong personality, her outstanding point is to learn and explore. The interesting point about Spain was probably inspired when she studied the song Lorca's Guitar by poet Thanh Thao (in the 12th grade textbook) that I taught, so Nhu Nguyen decided to choose to study Spanish."
As the author of the poem Lorca's Guitar in the 12th grade literature textbook, knowing that little story, I am also very happy about this choice of a female student I have never known.
Spain is a wonderful country, not only with bullfighting, gypsy dancers or flamenco music. There are also world-class poets, writers and painters, of whom FGLorca is one of the most representative.
The story of that poem inspiring Vietnamese students, I think, is that the teachers who teach this poem have inspired their students. And that can bring about interesting and good results.
When we, the students, learn literature and are taught by teachers in an inspiring way, they will easily absorb the core of the literary work, and if at a higher level, will find in the lectures, "suggestions" for themselves.
Choosing to learn Spanish is to learn and love this beautiful country more deeply, and from the language, it can be a solid bridge to Spanish literature and art, to the life of the Spanish people.
Students in a foreign language class
Spanish is a great language and when used well, students will have many opportunities in work as well as in life.
From the story of female student Nhu Nguyen choosing to study Spanish, I remember the late writer Nguyen Trung Duc, my close friend. During the war against America, Nguyen Trung Duc studied Spanish in Cuba, and later he became a writer specializing in translating great literary works from Spanish into Vietnamese.
The contribution of writer-translator Nguyen Trung Duc to contemporary Vietnamese literature is great, when through his translations, the world's classic works written in Spanish by GGMarquez, L. Borges, Octavio Paz, and a number of great Latin American writers reached Vietnamese readers during the difficult years of the subsidy period.
Domestic literature always hopes to receive suggestions, inspirations, and valuable lessons from great works, famous works of foreign literature, and great writers in the world.
All of this has to be done through language, either through the original text or through translation, it cannot be otherwise.
Because of that, we hope that female student Nhu Nguyen will successfully learn Spanish and many of her other friends will also choose to learn other languages, in addition to the few languages that many people choose to learn.
