According to this source, Hamas has set as conditions for handing over power to the Palestinian National Authority the guarantee that government officials in the Gaza Strip will be hired into the new government or retired with a commitment to pay their full salaries.

The source added that the decision to hand over power to the Palestinian National Authority was made by the Hamas leadership after strong pressure from Egypt during recent negotiations in Cairo.

Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007. The Islamist movement still runs Gaza's civil service, health care and police. Meanwhile, the internationally recognized Palestinian National Authority is based in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Earlier, on February 16, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasim announced that the Islamic movement "has shown considerable flexibility" with Egyptian officials about its willingness to explore all options for a political and administrative settlement in the Gaza Strip without the group's participation.

According to him, this goodwill is aimed at eliminating the occupying power's pretext for continuing the conflict and also at initiating a real reconstruction process for the Gaza Strip.

The above information was given in the previous context, on February 15, an Egyptian source close to the Gaza ceasefire negotiations told Al-Qahera News TV channel that Hamas would not participate in the management of the Gaza Strip in the upcoming period.

This move by Hamas is in line with the tough stance of Israel and the US, which firmly oppose the presence of this movement in the Mediterranean strip of land.

The recent statements came as Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to the terms of the Gaza ceasefire deal, while demanding that mediators pressure Israel to end its violations of the agreement.

Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League (AL) reaffirmed their total opposition to recent US proposals for the takeover of the Gaza Strip and the resettlement of Palestinians in Arab and Muslim countries, considering this an act of ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip.

Egypt is also preparing to unveil a comprehensive plan for the immediate reconstruction of the war-torn Mediterranean strip, without displacing Gaza’s population. Cairo supports the empowerment of the Palestinian National Authority to govern a unified Palestinian territory, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with a view to establishing an independent Palestinian state as part of the two-state solution.
