Artists of S, A, B and C ranks in Vietnamese showbiz do not have fixed salaries, and the rate of change is getting faster. For S rank, there are singers with salaries ranging from 1.2-1.6 billion VND/show with many conditions attached. He once had 1-2 shows that set a record of 2 billion VND.
Unbelievable salary of S-list stars
Previously, the concept of "A-list stars" referred to top stars in the entertainment industry.
For about the past 5 years, due to the strong development of idol culture, the concept of "S-class stars" was born, with very few artists completely surpassing their A-class colleagues. In Vietnam, the number of artists in this group can be counted on one hand.
S-class stars have salaries ranging from 700-800 million to 2 billion VND.
According to some private sources of VietNamNet, a male singer has a salary ranging from 1.2-1.6 billion VND/show with many conditions attached. He once had 1-2 shows that set a record of 2 billion VND.
This category also includes male singer A. who usually takes 1 billion VND/3 songs, the common condition is not accepting small brands and prioritizing brands that have ambassador contracts.
Another female singer is famous for charging her salary based on her emotions. For big brands, she quotes 1 billion VND but is willing to charge an "emotional" price of 500-600 million VND for close friends.
Rank S also has a rapper with a salary at the floor level but the conditions are relatively strict.
Class A is divided into 2 levels. In which, class A+ has a salary equivalent to the base level of class S (500-700 million VND), typically a female singer known as "Queen", who participated in a large-scale reality music TV show for women not long ago, with a generous salary of 700 million VND.
This level also gathers most of the hottest Gen Z singers and rappers today, usually names coming from top reality TV shows in the past 2 years such as singer M., rapper T., rapper H...
A male singer who has been famous for less than 3 years has a price tag of 500-800 million VND, even surpassing an S-class star even though he is only at A+ level.
A female singer who was once the champion of a singing contest, despite being absent from the market for a while, still firmly believes "she won't sing for less than 500 million VND".
Tier A - includes most of the previous generation of A-list stars, hot faces who have just "increased in value" thanks to reality TV (even though they didn't win high prizes)... with salaries ranging from 250-300 million VND to under 500 million VND.
Levels B+ and A- are a mix, mainly consisting of the most sought-after faces at the moment, regularly appearing at venues and stages from big shows to tea rooms, with a salary of 200-250 million VND.
Level B - gathers veteran names from the previous generation and contemporary singers who are not so famous. The salary is approximately 100-200 million VND.
Class C is about 30-100 million VND. Class D is on average 5-10 million VND or more. Below this level are usually young people struggling in their career, trying to stay afloat.
Performance and billion-dollar salary
The hierarchy, the seemingly flat, "black and white" numbers mentioned above are for reference only. When entering into price negotiations, the reality is varied and sometimes quite humiliating.
VietNamNet's source said that the price quotation not only includes singing fees but also includes many other costs such as: posting program posters before the show, posting photos on social networks after the show...
Most singers quote in packages, some stars accept separate prices so that some small brands can afford it.
In the case of a male singer of S-class with an average salary of 1.2 billion VND, including many activities outside of singing such as: new arrangements, commitments to go viral on social networks...
All are agreed upon in the contract, forcing the singer to perform and report fully to pay benefits to the brand.
The above figures are roughly the average for a small to medium-sized show. For large shows with branding elements, the figure can increase by 30-50%.
Travel and accommodation expenses are also a significant part. For example, an A-list female singer living abroad with a salary of 250-300 million VND only accepts shows with the condition of booking business class air tickets and a minimum 4-star hotel.
Prices tend to change rapidly, even within a few months. The final figure depends on many objective and subjective factors.
For example, singers at A- and B+ levels have a generous salary of 200-250 million VND. However, small stages such as tea rooms prefer the actual revenue sharing method, at a ratio of 50:50 or 60:40 depending on the location. For example, if a music night earns 200 million VND, the singer only gets 100 million VND.
This comes from the fact that small stages do shows regularly, have a fixed audience, and singers accept the actual form of revenue sharing to maintain close relationships in exchange for a stable income.
It is not uncommon for singers to quote prices based on their feelings. Some people charge up to 500 million VND but only quote 100-150 million VND to their relatives and acquaintances. Some names never "offer" more than 20-50 million VND.
Show organizers favor previous generation A-list singers with comfortable salaries, high efficiency, and good working relationships. Many show organizers especially appreciate a male singer nicknamed "The King" because of his emotional personality.
"They are the most sought-after singers, while many current A-list singers have few shows due to their attitudes. No show producer wants to work with someone who quotes high prices but has a problematic attitude. In fact, each show or event only has one 'key' name. Besides this person, the other 4-5 names can be changed in a 'jiffy' according to the budget," the source said.
More ironically, some famous people suddenly "shout" out their prices and then put themselves in a "dilemma" - unable to lower their prices but keeping them the same means no shows.
"For example, singer B. has a salary of 600-700 million VND but no one invites him to shows. With that price, I would rather invite singer T. for only about 400 million VND but with the same effect," the source said.
Ultimately, the salary does not determine a singer's rank in showbiz.
Veteran singers are always A-list stars even though their current salary is equivalent to B-list. On the contrary, many singers have A-list salaries but their market position is only B-list.
Salary level sometimes has the same nature as performance, but "performance is temporary, class is forever".
