TASS news agency quoted Mr. Vasily Golubev, Governor of Rostov province (Russia), saying that on the night of December 16, a series of UAVs attempted to attack the airbase in the town of Morozovsk.
The official added that Russian air defense systems "shot down most of the UAVs" and confirmed that the attack did not cause any significant damage. Meanwhile, the airport in the city of Volgograd had to temporarily suspend operations to ensure safety.
According to local media, the airbase in Morozovsk is home to Russia's 559th Frontline Bomber Regiment with aircraft such as the Su-24, Su-24M and Su-34.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that on the night of December 16, the country's air defense systems intercepted a total of 35 UAVs believed to be from Ukraine targeting targets in the Lipetsk, Rostov and Volgograd regions.
This is part of a series of recent Ukrainian UAV attacks on Russian territory. The Ukrainian military is believed to have UAVs with a range of up to 750km. These UAVs can carry about 30kg of explosives.
At the beginning of the conflict, Kiev had the advantage in UAVs. However, Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the Achilles drone squadron of the 92nd Assault Brigade of Ukraine, said that the size of Russia's UAV fleet is 5-7 times larger than Ukraine's in all hotspots on the battlefield.
According to him, this difference has led to different strategies between the two sides. Because they do not have the same potential as their opponents, Ukraine is forced to use UAVs more carefully.
Ukraine only deploys drones “when we have a target,” while Russia can deploy first-person view (FPV) drones that loiter in airspace to detect attack targets.
