South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

On May 16, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to receive African delegations and leaders regarding a potential peace plan for the conflict in Ukraine.

Six African leaders are expected to travel to Moscow and Kiev as soon as possible to help find a solution to the conflict.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital Cape Town, President Ramaphosa stated that he had separate phone calls with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts last weekend.

During the phone call, he presented the initiatives of South Africa, Zambia, Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Uganda and Egypt.

Mr. Ramaphosa said he had agreed with President Putin and his counterpart Zelensky to begin preparations for meetings with leaders of the above African countries.

According to the South African leader, the United Nations and the African Union (AU) have been informed of the plan and welcomed the initiative of African countries.

Mr. Ramaphosa did not give a specific time for the meeting, but noted that Africa is also suffering severe consequences due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has pushed up grain prices and negatively impacted world trade./.
