What kind of fish is the "rich fish" being successfully raised in a commune of Lao Cai, and where does it come from?

Eight years ago, Mr. Hoang Van Xo's family in Tri Trong village was one of the first two households in Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district ( Lao Cai province) to boldly bring sturgeon home for experimental breeding.

Before that, to prepare to bring the "rich" fish for experimental farming, Mr. Xo directly went to learn knowledge and techniques of raising cold-water fish from households with experience in raising sturgeon in Sa Pa town and Bat Xat district.

Once he had mastered the technique of raising cold water fish, he carefully studied the terrain and consulted experts to invest in a scientific and professional farm.

He built a system of 4 independent pipes leading water to 4 standard round tanks.

Being cautious, in the first crop he only tested raising 1 tank with more than 100 sturgeon fry.

After a trial period of raising sturgeon, he found that the specialty fish was well adapted to the local water source and climate, so he confidently invested in expanding the scale of the farming tank.

Currently, with 4 continuous sturgeon farming tanks, Mr. Xo's family supplies the market with more than 5 tons of commercial sturgeon each year, earning a profit of more than 200 million VND.

Raising "rich fish" - raising sturgeon, a specialty fish, has helped many farming households in Phuc Khanh commune (Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province) have better income.

According to Mr. Xo, it is necessary to focus on disease prevention for sturgeon during the changing seasons, especially after it rains, the water in the tank is often cloudy, at this time it is necessary to quickly lower the water level in the tank, clean and change the water.

At the same time, Mr. Xo conducts salt baths to control parasites and prevent diseases for sturgeon raised in tanks.

Entering the 6th year of raising sturgeon, the 5 tanks of Mr. Ly Van Ben's family in Tri Trong village have stabilized. Thanks to the correct application of farming and care techniques, ensuring water sources, the fish have grown well, bringing a good income to the family.

According to Mr. Ben, sturgeon is called the fish of the "rich" because the investment cost is high, the care techniques are strict, and the locations with suitable water sources are limited, so few people have the conditions to raise them.

Mr. Ben's family farm designed the tanks in a ladder form to take advantage of the water from the upper tank flowing down to the lower tank. The fish fry are imported from reputable establishments in Sa Pa town.

From personal experience, when transporting fish from the breeding facility, he will let the fish get used to the environment in a small tank, then move them to larger tanks for commercial farming.

“In the summer, water resources are limited, so for fish to grow well, it is necessary to proactively adjust the amount of water and appropriate stocking density, and use aerators when the heat lasts for a long time. During the rainy season, it is necessary to pay attention to checking the water pipes, avoid letting garbage cover the pipes, and pay attention to cleaning the tank immediately after the rain to remove dirty water,” Mr. Ben shared more about his experience in raising sturgeon.

Sturgeon has high nutritional value, is easy to process into many delicious dishes, and is popular with consumers.

Sturgeon farming requires high technology and large investment capital (from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of VND), but the economic value is many times higher than other farming species in the locality; the consumption market is wide (inside and outside the province).

Currently, commercial sturgeon are raised for about 12 - 15 months, when the weight reaches 2 - 2.5 kg/fish or more, they can be sold. The average selling price is 180,000 - 190,000 VND/kg (at the pond).

According to people's calculations, the production cost of 1 sturgeon is from 170,000 - 200,000 VND, the selling price is from 360,000 - 380,000 VND/fish, the breeder earns nearly half the profit.

Due to the advantages of terrain, water resources, and year-round cool climate, some highland villages of Phuc Khanh commune are suitable for raising cold-water fish species.

Currently, in Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district (Lao Cai province), there are 31 households with 89 sturgeon farming tanks (each tank holds 500 - 700 fish), mainly concentrated in Tri Trong, Tri Ngoai, and Lang Nu villages. Households develop sturgeon farming mainly on ineffective agricultural land.

The local government is coordinating with the district's functional departments to continue to have policies to support farmers of this specialty fish, and at the same time encourage households to establish sturgeon farming cooperatives to closely link production and product consumption.

Sturgeon is a genus of fish with the scientific name Acipenser with 21 known species. One of the oldest genera of fish still in existence, they are native to the waters of Europe, Asia and North America...
