At a regular press conference on the afternoon of December 19, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang spoke out about the announcement by Singaporean authorities about the knife murder case involving a Vietnamese citizen on December 10.
"According to information from the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore, Singaporean officials announced that a Vietnamese citizen was attacked and died after being taken to the emergency room on December 10. Authorities have arrested the attacker and tried him according to local regulations," said Ms. Pham Thu Hang.
Immediately after receiving the information, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore proactively contacted Singaporean authorities to verify the information and requested an investigation to clarify the incident. The Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore also contacted and supported the victim's family to complete funeral procedures and bring the victim's body back to Vietnam.
On this occasion, Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang, on behalf of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sent her deepest condolences to the victim's family.
Previously, Singaporean media and authorities reported that Ms. Dao Thi Hong, 34 years old, Vietnamese nationality, was the victim of a knife murder in Hougang on December 10. The victim, who worked at the Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware store at Block 210 Hougang Street 21, was stabbed multiple times by a 42-year-old man.
The assailant is believed to be a co-worker at the same shop as Ms Hong and was also injured in the incident. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said one person was taken to Changi General Hospital and the other to Sengkang General Hospital. Ms Hong was conscious when she was first brought to the hospital, but later died from her injuries.
The suspect is being held on murder charges. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
This is the 10th murder in Singapore this year, and the third in less than two weeks.
